The elegant brilliance of Halo's design, by Kotaku

Why does anyone give a shit about the site? Just read the -blam!-ing article already, who cares? It's a really interesting article, and a great analysis of both level design in general, and the design direction of Halo. A lot of fascinating little points. That said, The Silent Cartographer doesn't quite have everything that makes Halo brilliant, as it lacks the enemy vs. enemy encounters that made the last three levels even more fantastic (although not as fantastic as Assault on the Control Room, IMO, but that level's physical design is unmatched in Halo's history).

 • A boring article full of nostalgia and unsupported presuppositions. I'm still not sure if the first four paragraphs are in reference to Halo, modern military-shooters, or first-person shooters in general, because they apply to all. The first two paragraphs literally describe the opening of Halo: Combat Evolved, even though I'm sure they were written to contrast Halo: Combat Evolved and the modern military-shooter. I'm sorry, but this is a silly article that serves to hate on modern military shooters, and hype up Budgie's upcoming title by referring to the studio's previous work as excellent, even though Halo: Combat Evolved is a mediocre first-person shooter that excelled on consoles at the time .
