What exactly did the forerunners do that made the precursors decide to come back to life as the Flood?

Precursors decided that humanity would inherit the Mantle, and the Forerunners believed that they were going to be erased like many other species who failed the Precursors' 'test' supposedly had. They struck out first and drove the Precursors out of the galaxy. The Precursors were in awe at the capacity for violence that their creations had and chose not to respond in order to experience the full power of what they had created, but they also sought survival strategies too - some Precursors disappeared and went into suspended animation (we do not know what happened to them), but others became a fine powder stored on ancient automated starships. The powder was designed to regenerate their old forms, but as 10 million years passed the powder became defective and brought only sickness and disease- culminating in the birth of the Flood.

Yes and back in the day mankind was a space faring race with colonies on other planets. But the flood came and mankind started traveling to other planets, in the forerunners and prometheans territory. This started the war that would eventually lead to mankind's devolution into cavemen. The diadect then activated the halo array and wiped life from the universe. The librarian was the one responsible for sowing the seeds of life back into the universe and she had a distinct hand in mankind's revival. She altered key things in our history to eventually lead up to john 117 being born, drafted into the spartan program, and given his suit. His suit is based off of ancient forerunner combat skins, hence the orange visor. Master chief is the next step in mans evolution. And in halo 4 we see that true as spartan 4s are being produced more and more effectively.

They exterminated them.
