As I count the seconds till Destiny releases, I constantly build and rebuild my character in my mind. I played in the beta as a Hunter, and I usually used a Scout Rifle. I experimented with other guns, but always went back to the scout rifle. I enjoyed their range, accuracy, and consistent ability to take apart enemies with precision kills. However, hand cannons look awesome, and I am planning on building a bladedancer that benefits most from speed. I was wondering, what is there that the hand cannon has, that scout rifles do not? Scout rifles fire faster, reload quicker, have more range, and are more accurate than Hand cannons. One thing I thought about was speed. Has anyone tested to see if the lighter weight of a Hand Cannon increases their speed? Since I am building a heavy melee character with a bladedancer, speed is VERY important to me, and frankly hand cannons look awesome. However, if they are all around just smaller nerfed scout rifles, I dont think i could justify devoting armor choices and the overall path of my build toward them. Why should I choose the hand cannon over the scout rifle? I can see how making a kill with a hand cannon would be more awesome, simply because they are harder to use, but if they dont have any truly redeeming qualities, I feel the choice is obviously scout rifle.
(Note: Guys check the posting date. This was made pre-launch. Now that I have experimented with different types of weapons, I have found the Hand Cannon to be my favorite Primary. They gave it some buffs at launch, and I enjoy it. Look before you post boys and girls.)

Hand cannon is superior with my playstyle in pve as well as pvp. I track better with the quasi dot/iron sight. Scopes on scouts make me wanna lead to much and the one standard sight I have used was obstructive. Used my Lord High Fixer until I got my current cannon. It boils down to what kills better for you. Pvp-wise hand cannons are slow but deliberate unlike the happy go lucky shotty which is like a panic button when you run into someone. ARs feel like they take to long on task for result. Scouts feel like they should hit harder per shot. I like canmons tag move tag or strafe tag tag jump tag mobility. Just my dollar and a half.

Hand Cannons tend to have a much higher impact stat than Scout Rifles. Impact is a very import stat is you want high damage numbers when getting those crits. Plus, it helps with causing enemies to flinch/stagger when hitting their critical spot.

Hand cannons do way more impact damage, they are not as accurate and most have a slightly worse fire rate but the impact damage makes up for it even at range double damage is double damage. Take a peek at my looted lord high fixer it has fast reload on precision kills and plus 2 agility it's pretty good taking things head off in pve. But the scout rifle is entirely better for pvp and that's why I also have a crusader 1

Hand cannons can be god tier in PvE if you have a good one.
-
So far, preference.

What makes no sense to me is at mid range when i get all head shots with my scout rifle as fast as it will shoot, i still get killed by AR's. U think they would reward accurate shooters with more damage than spraying the body with AR's
-
hand cannons do way more damage now. That's about it, but worth it for PvE
-
Hand cannons are dope. Check mine out.

Maybe someone wants to play as a cowboy.
-
Hand cannons are a 2 hit with a crit and a 3 hit without crit. They are gold if you can find one with minimal recoil
-
i primarily use hand cannons in pvp. hand cannons do alot of upfront dmg, i can usually take down anyone in 2-3 shots. hip firing is pretty accurate with a hand cannon and like someone pointed out, even body shots deals good damage.
-
Difference is on non precision hits. Hand cannon does more damage on body shots. Scout rifle does pathetic damage on anything other than precision shots. Hand cannon > scout rifle when you are talking about quick targeting
-
Well, hand cannons are mostly effective in Crucible PvP, especially Control maps. In control maps, the flags are usually in an enclosed space with a few doors, so when an enemy comes in you can kill them with one shot. I wouldn't recommend using them in Story missions, though.
