How do you mitigate canon breaking by games, books, and other media? Is there really a "Halo Bible"? I haven't seen your thoughts on this subject before.

  •
How do you mitigate canon breaking by games, books, and other media?
Most canon breaking parts of the story are really minor errors on an authors part, so it's really easy to just let them disappear in the folds on Halo's story. However, the big ticket stuff... I generally don't do anything to mitigate it unless there is something that suggests or implies an alternate scenario.
Is there really a "Halo Bible"?
Yes. At Bungie it was a binder with a bunch of loose leaf papers with notes and ideas jotted down on them. Under 343i, it sounds like it's become more robust and organized.

  • Yeah, minor stuff like centrifugal force instead of artificial gravity in ships. When it comes to the large canonical errors like with Reach, how do you regard it? A friend of mine totally ignores its existence and I've heard other people painfully accept the retcon. I think even Karen Traviss references the S3s on Reach in Glasslands. So what's your approach?

Reach is entirely canon. It works. It does nudge one or two events out of the way, but it works, thanks to 343i's periphery canon. Now at first, I was raging pretty hard.

  • I'm surprised to see that answer. I hope you know that wasn't bait. It's serious curiosity. Since you're our resident breathing encyclopedia on Halo lore, I figured I'd get your opinion on the matter. Thank you

  • Yup. Just to clarify, what Bungie supplied us with didn't make any sense. I mean, you had Rooster Teeth coming up with their own timeline to try and explain how the game works. Anyway though, that's in the past, I still dislike Reach's story, but it does make sense.

  • Everybody knows Reach is ONI fanfiction, the letters in the LE confirm it.

  • No they don't.

  • Yes they do, they say it is a disc with recreated events. The book has an omnipotent POW though.

  • The events of the game are still canon. You can pretend it isn't, but when Halo lore starts circling back around and connecting to Reach's story, you'll be sitting there confused as hell.
