Ok let me preface by saying this will be rather long winded.
Ok so its not confirmed but a large portion of the community believes that there will be a third subclass for each class, and that the third subclass will be of an element not found in the other two for that class.
The reasons for this I am sure many of you already know, but my theory comes from another trend that I think has gone mostly unnoticed.
See so far we have the three classes Titan, Hunter, and Warlock. Each class has two subclass focuses based on two of the three confirmed types of light in the game; plus another one that is speculated to be of the types of light not found in the other subclasses for that class.
Now here is the trend I've noticed, the Titan and Hunter both have melee based supers for short range, the Warlock and Titan have supers that can be used as "support" for mid range engagements, and the Warlock and Hunter have ranged damage supers for longer ranges. Now we know that the Titan as a class seems to favor close range engagements, the Hunter class seems to be built for longer ranges, and the Warlock falls somewhere in between with its high regen stat useful for mid range where cover is a valuable asset.
With the above information in mind the conclusion I was drawn to is that IF the classes get a third unique subclass, and IF it is of the third light type, then each class will get a super that favors the combat conditions that their other supers aren't specialized in. An example would be a Warlock subclass based on Arc light that gravitates toward close quarters combat and supports heavy use of its melee, or a Titan subclass that seems more fit to longer ranged engagements; both of these examples would of course use their class' special attribute to their advantage, and be customizable.
Now if even most of this ends up being true I think it would mean that instead of bullet sponge, medic, and glass canon, bungie's "holy trinity" is based more on ranges in combat situations.
Honestly if you read that whole thing then tell me what you think, try to find holes in my theory or help reinforce it. Keep in mind that all the classes can be used well in any situation and that all of this is strictly from a meta-gaming perspective.
EDIT: I just had the though that the different types of light trend to certain roles E.g. arc= close, void=midrange.
