People did understand what Microsoft's policies like DRM were going to do, which is why there was so much backlash.
It's true that a lot of the new games require online play, but it is optional to play those games. If I am playing in an area with crappy connection, I can still choose to play single player games without having to worry about it. Microsoft would have made it so you'd have to check in every day. If you didn't, too bad, no games for you. And don't worry about selling your used games, Microsoft previously made it so difficult that you wouldn't bother! Problem solved! Because they sold out to the whiners, now we have the option to sell or lend our used games, darn it. It just isn't right! And who needed the option to turn off the Kinect when the government might have been using it to spy on us? More spying, more safety, more happiness! People don't know what they are missing out on, with these freedoms and pointless rights.
And never mind that the visual quality for the Xbox was significantly lower for almost every new game until recently. Who wants graphics when they have a brand new next-gen game console?
