If you've ever used Mumble, you know what I'm talking about.
Being able to hear voice chat for people nearby and have the volume adjust based on how far away they are. It would be great for Freeroam mode and places like the Tower. You wouldn't hear everyone at the same time, just those in the same section as you, and the volume would would change based on distance and occlusion (meaning if there's a large wall between you and someone, it would be quieter/muffled).
I'm thinking this would be ideal for public communication, while fireteams can still talk regardless of distance (like they have radios).
I was originally going to suggest actual positional audio, so voice chat would also seem to come from the direction of someone's character, but unfortunately consoles only come with mono headsets.

That was actually a thing, and it sounded sweet. The voices had reverb of the room and everything. Try a stereo headset next time
