Scariest Camping Experiences

Title says it all. If you have a camping experience that was scary in any way, shape, or form, post it here. Myself, I have three I would like to share. Zombie
I was on an amazon hiking trip I. The mountains, and after and exhausting day, we set up camp. The camp area was relatively popular, since there were designated camp sites an everything. Right before I fell asleep, there was a blood-curdling scream, to which some others responded: 'Was that one of ours?' 'Nope' That night, I woke up because I needed to take a piss. I got out of my tent, but something seemed off. When I climbed back into my sleeping bag, I couldn't sleep, so I listened to the silence of the forest. Only, it wasn't silent. I began hearing noises, growling. I thought it was a bear, and I was terrified as I sat there, thinking it was coming closer. Eventually, it sounded like it was right outside my tent. Then, I heard something that set my hairs on end. A guttural human moan filled my ears, and my mind immediately went back to the scream. In my terror, I logically assumed there was a zombie outside my tent. I sat there, unmoving, for an eternity. Finally, I shifted, and nudged my tent mate awake. I asked him what he thought he heard, and he responded: 'It's just people snoring.' I sat and listened. Surely enough, I could pick out the individual snores of people around me that formed such a horrible sound. I felt pretty ridiculous after that.
It's too damn dark
On a different hiking trip, I had one of the most terrifying experiences in a long time. After setting up camp and having a great dinner, we went to sleep under a very cloudy sky. My luck would have it that I would need to go to the bathroom that night. I woke up, and the first thing I noticed was the silence. It was completely quiet, even with my tent mate snoring next to me. The air even hung heavy with silence. Next, I noticed the darkness. I waited for my eyes to adjust, but they never did, and I eventually used my flashlight. It cut trough the darkness like a hot knife through butter. When I got out of the tent, it was worse. I could feel the amount of space around me in the forest, but it was completely silent. Nothing moved. The wind did not blow. The silence was suffocating. Not only that, but I was blind everywhere except where I pointed my light. I then poked my way through the dark, pissed, and got back as quickly as possible.
My Brother Almost Died
I wasn't there for it myself, but my brother told me this story after the fact. We were at Havasupi, and we had hiked down to moony falls, and were walking along the river. Needless to say, there was a lot of cool formations cut out by the river, but at one point I was walking , and someone pointed to a little blue spot in the water and said 'don't step there' As it turns out, my brother had been walking along and had stepped in that very spot. He said there was a strong suction, and he was pulled under the water. He didn't know where he was for a second, and he said he hit some stuff underwater. He was running out of breath, but finally he came up from under the falls. Nobody had even noticed that he went under. He could have drowned down there.
Well when he woke up he had a seizure and later died of a heart attack. Later we found out it was a terrorist that had been spying on him. He got tried and died by lethal injection. After all that we went back to camping and that made me go into the military when I was older.
true story

i was only 5
• I set up wards around my camp every night that I set one up, that way I won't be bothered, I've had some... Interesting experiences I suppose one situation that might be considered frightening is I was in a dangerous realm one time so I put up an extra strong ward to ward away creatures Didn't get much sleep, all you could hear was growling and scratching, as well as thuds of bodies hitting the ground from fights breaking out among whatever was on the outside Luckily none broke through, I could've held them off I'd just rather not have to, you know?

      • Rural NSW, Australia. Middle of summer (about 40 Celsius). I know a few people who own some land down there (about 500km north-west of Sydney if you care), and occasionally I ask them if I can camp out at their property, and usually they let me. One time, about a year back, I was in a clearing by myself with a new rifle (and by new I mean recently purchased, but used), hadn't zeroed it in or anything, and it had this odd issue where it wouldn't chamber a round from the magazine sometimes, meaning you had to manually load each bullet. My car was about 100 metres behind me. I wasn't intending on hunting, just felt like going for a walk, however the area I was in was filled with all sorts of feral animals, so it was best to be on the safe side. ANyway, this precaution probably saved me from some serious harm when a bitch and her 3 young-ish children tracked me down. I've never seen anything like it before (I never really go hunting) - they followed the exact path that I had walked through, meaning they had caught my scent and come for food. My suspicions were proven correct when they started fronting on me. I never realized that ferals would have the intelligence to employ any strategy, but sure enough two of the dogs had pissed off out of sight, to, I assume, attack me from behind. I'll admit, I was uneasy, but if anything went too sketchy, I had my rifle. They weren't stopping, and the snarling kept on getting louder, so I attempted to load my rifle and fire off a shot over their heads so as to scare them off. Sure enough, heap of shit jams. Now I'm shaking, because there's no-one nearby for about an hour in any direction, and my gun won't load. So, I had to attempt to chamber a round manually, an action that can be done in a manner of seconds when in any "controlled" situation (read: when you have your shit together) but feels like forever when there's two mean-ass dogs snarling at you and two others that have disappeared off to god knows where. I finally get a round in, and shoot it over the heads of the bitch and the young dog, and into the dirt behind them. As you would guess considering my luck thus far, it did nothing. Now I was thinking I was really up shit creek - If I shot one, I assume that the others would attack, and I've been told that ferals really like going for the neck. I was almost at my car - it would take around 5 seconds to get to it, and the dogs that I could see were about 10 metres away from me at this point. I went for it - my magazine actually chambering a round this time, I shot another round into the air and bolted. I gained a few seconds while the ferals ducked, and got to the door just as they started to run after me. Of course the door was locked - the window however, wasn't. I was incredibly lucky those ferals didn't bite my ass, and the seemingly trivial and controllable event spiraled into madness pretty quickly. Was I in any real amount of danger? I don't know. What I do know is that the two young dogs had flanked me like I thought they would - the fact that they were hunting me makes me think yes, I could have been in some shit. I don't know if I can take down 4 feral dogs with a gun that barely worked and my hands in a manner of seconds.

        • me and some buddies gathered around the campfire and sung our campfire song...one of them didn't like it so he pulled out his clarinet but it's not safe to play a clarinet at night. We start telling him that bears are attracted to it but he doesn't believe it and continues to play his clarinet and does other things that would attract a bear to try and disprove us. Then a bear appears so we quickly draw an anti bear circle around us and the bear does not bother us. The End.

          • This is hard for me to talk about, but a few years ago I went camping with my dad and uncle. We were in a heavily wooded area, not far from a road. We had a pick up truck, three tents and a few assorted hunting rifles. During the day we had a good time. My dad let me have my first beer. I remember that taste... We were putting the cans out as targets and were trying to shoot them. I was such a bad shot, but I don't care, it was one of the most fun days I've ever had. Later on, towards sunset we built a fire, and were making dinner. What we'd do is wrap up a potato, some veggies and a steak in foil, and then just toss it in the fire near the edge, and let everything kinda cook together. With a little salt and pepper, it can be really good. We had our dinner, and my dad let me have a second beer while he and my uncle pulled out a bottle of whisky. Eventually we decided to turn in for the night. We wanted to go hiking to a waterfall a few miles in, where we could go cliff diving. I was awoken suddenly by my dad in my tent. He held his hand over my mouth and told me to be quiet. He said something was wrong with my uncle. I nodded, and he uncovered my mouth and pointed. In the darkness I could see the figure of my uncle yelling, and holding one of the rifles. I thought at first he was drunk, but after listening, he sounded sober, but terrified. "WHY WON'T YOU LEAVE ME ALONE! YOU CAN'T GET MY FAMILY TOO! YOU TOOK ME ONCE, YOU AIN'T TAKING ME AGAIN!" At that last one he fell to his knees, put the barrel of the rifle under his chin. My heart froze. I thought that this was a nightmare, that none of this could be real. Time took on that spongy slow feeling you get in horror movies as the killer is walking slowly behind his victim, while she is running full sprint, yet he still catches up. I heard him say "no...not again" when a bright light came on right above him. It was a hard edged light, like a LED. It seemed to be utterly motionless above us. My uncle was now clear, and we could see that he was sweating, and seemingly pushing against restraints. Suddenly the light narrowed so it just lit his face... and he was yanked upwards. It looked like something had grabbed his leg, and pulled him up the way a child would a toy. The light came on again. It moved around our campsite in a clear search pattern. My dad pressed me to the ground, again, holding my mouth closed. He whispered that as soon as it moved away, run to the truck. He said that I would have to drive, and he would have a rifle to shoot if needed. I have never been so scared. The light shut off. We broke to the truck. The light snapped on as soon as we moved, and whatever grabbed my uncle, grabbed my dad too. He screamed TYYYLLLLER! as he was pulled up into the light. I dove in the truck, and swear that I felt something brush my shoe as I dove in and slammed the door behind me. The engine roared on. I pressed the gas and sped to the road and to our home. About half way the truck sputtered out of gas, though there was a payphone near by. I called a cab and waited..nervously looking to the sky. I saw the headlights in the distance as the cab pulled up. The license plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror. If anything I could say that this cab was rare But I thought 'Nah, forget it' - 'Yo, homes to Bel Air' I pulled up to the house about 7 or 8. And I yelled to the cabbie 'Yo homes smell ya later.' I looked at my kingdom, I was finally there. To sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel Air

            • Not a camping story, but here goes: I work an over-night shift desk job about 45 minutes from where I live. I drive the same route, every day, and never deviate. EVER. The route basically takes me down a main road (normally deserted at close to midnight) and then I can either A) Take highway 36 (if you live in Colorado, you know how crappy a choice that is) or B) cross the railroad tracks and take the frontage road next to the highway in to the next exit. I take B, and the road is not only always empty, but is largely devoid of street lights and runs down-hill from the highway (just close enough to see it, but not close enough to get adequate light from it). So one night, I'm driving in, cross the tracks, and start down this frontage road when I notice something is IMMEDIATELY off. Firstly, there is a train just stopped on the tracks right near the turn on (not unusual), but all its lights are on, the conductor is leaning out the window, and it's pulling cars I've never seen the likes of before (look kinda like they might be carrying livestock, but seem too heavy-duty for that). Secondly, there is a homeless looking man standing in the MIDDLE OF THE FREAKING ROAD about 20 feet from my car. I obviously stop my car and idle for a second, trying to figure out what's happening. The conductor obviously sees the guy, and I originally figure maybe he was hitching a ride on the train. But then things hit a level of eerie I've never experienced before, and the homeless-looking man starts to move towards my car. But it's not normal movement, it's a jerky, rigor-mortis type walk and he's dragging his feet too much, swinging one arm too widely, and his heads cocked at a strange angle. I mother-blam!-ing panicked, gunned my car and sped around the guy, never getting a really good look at him. Needless to say, I get in to work shaken but none-the-worse-for-wear. The next day, though, I'm making the same trip in, but now there's a cop with too many road-flares blocking the road. I can't see anything past the flares, and I'm told I have to take the highway, with no reasoning given other than "just do it,". As I'm pulling around to take the detour, I notice there is a HUGE armored bus-looking behemoth of a vehicle driving down the closed road behind the cop. I have never seen anything like it before, and was baffled as to what it's purpose could be. So, I jumped onto the highway, and slowed down (yeah, yeah, rubbernecking, whatever) and took a peek down the hill at the frontage road where there was a fleet of vehicles and the bus-thing all circled up in an open dirt lot at the end of the shops running down the road. Now, I saw no chemical smoke, no people, just a ton of flares and a ton of vehicles. The news later reported that some employees had called in a HAZMAT team for a chemical clean up, but I know that there's just a storage building (like UHAUL) and an office-type business at the end of these buildings, and I also know they are all closed completely by the time I drive by. Still convinced that I witnessed a zombie and a subsequent zombie investigation.

              • I was up on the cliff with my sniper rifle, enjoying myself, them all of a sudden I realized that the other team had found me. I panicked, I tried to switch to my sidearm but to no avail. They were almost on top of me. Then, my buddies rolled around in the tank and blasted the shit out of them. I then resumed headshoting the other team as they spawned.

                  • I was backpacking in New Mexico and we arrived at our last camp. This area was a sort of shallow valley in the mountains so mountain lions and bears were known to use it to stalk prey from higher up. When we got there, we saw quite a few carcasses from cows and deer getting rekt. There were a shitload of animal noises all night and I had to pee but I couldn't because being alone around predators is dangerous, so I had to wait through the night with creepy-ass animal sounds everywhere and having to pee.

                    • When I was 12, my dad and I went camping by ourselves just a few weeks before the upcoming school year started. We go camping at a place that's about 15 miles away from the coast so its always fresh there. The first night there, my dad and I were sitting by the campfire. All of a sudden we hear this really loud roaring sound coming from somewhere. It wasn't a jet because a jet's sound would go away after a few seconds. This roaring sound kept going on and on. It wasn't an animal because no animal's roar is that loud unless it was Godzilla and this roar sound could easily be heard for miles. We couldn't tell if it was coming from the mountains, the sky, or anywhere else for that matter. We listened to the radio to see if anything bad was happening but there was nothing. Eventually the sound went away and we went to sleep. Late that night like at around 2am or 3am(can't really remember), the sound came back and it sounded even more creepy because there was no other sound coming from outside other than that noise. I couldn't go back to sleep and my dad apparently didn't hear the sound because he was knocked out. I got my PSP, plugged in my earphones, and played that until the sun came up. The years went by and my family has gone back to that campsite multiple times. I haven't heard that roaring sound ever since that time I went camping with my dad. Still never found out what it was.

                            • Well it was a dark raining day on the Stormfront. I held my L115 sniper rifle in my cold, dead hands. My gillie suit was soaked from the drenching rainfall. I overlooked the courtyard and noticed some Russian soldiers near an odd shaped statue. I aimed down my sight. Observing from what I saw there was also an American commander doing some sort of deal. He was the mole in the system. He was the traitor I was sent to take out. The only problem was that this man was my father... I thought about all of the memories and as I pulled the trigger they all washed away. But there was only a click. I'm not sure if this was God giving me my second chance but I was on a mission for Uncle Sam and I had to complete my objective. I took out the cartridge of my sniper and inspected the innards of the weapon. I shook it a few time and re inserted the cartridge and took aim once more at my father. I looked at his face one last time and just as I took my shot one of the Russian soldiers grabbed a hold of my father and changed placed with him. The bullet hit the soldier in the stomach and he called his buddies which emerged from the tall grass. They all pointed their carbines right at my fathers head. Shouting in audible dialogue I saw something I haven't seen in my father before. Confidence. He looked over his right shoulder at a bar near my sniping position and I saw another sniper. American. He was silently watching the events unfold. He knew I was here. The sniper looked at me and back into his scope. I had to disobey my mission orders. My coordinator must've lied to me. I shifted my aim to one of the 4 soldiers and took a deep breath. Aimed. Shot. The kick of the rifle felt very familiar and as the first soldier dropped another one quickly followed. The other sniper was helping me rescue my father. I hastily took aim at second soldier. Taking cover from the statue with my father in front of him, crouched against the short wall. The wind of the storm was picking up. The other sniper took out a third soldier leaving the one with my father remaining. He didn't shed a single look of doubt. I aimed my rifle at the Russian soldier's head. As I squeezed my finger around the trigger the wind picked up and a look of horror spread across my face. I watched as the Russian soldier dropped to the ground. His blood staining my dads uniform. I kept my aim on my father and he looked towards the bar at the other sniper. Through my scope I then saw him look me in the eyes. Just like when I was a kid. I knew this look. He was proud. He walked down a set of stairs and was returning to his vehicle. The engine started and he began to drive down the road towards the nearby base. The car jerked to the side and slid to a halt. I looked in the back window with my cool breath fogging in front of my view. There was a second person in the car. I watched for a few seconds and the struggle ended. And the car continued to the base. The winner of the duel was unclear to me. I glanced at the bar to my right and the sniper had gone. Left without a trace. I saw a glint of light come from his previous position. I packed up my gear and walked through the restaurant behind me to the bar and inspected the shining item he had left behind. It was a silver bullet. I held the bullet between my fingers as I looked at my reflection. I made my way back to camp and was "rewarded" with a discharge back home.
heres the camping part
*3 weeks later* My family and I decided to go on a camping trip and my father was recovering from a knife wound to his leg and to make a long story short a bear ate into our rations as dad wanted to hunt it and we killed it and tried to cook it but dad didn't know what he was doing so we left after two days and it really sucked that we smelt bad on the 7 hour drive home.

I was at my friend's 17th birthday, it was a camping trip. We were going to sleep (outside, no tent), when I was drifting off then out of no where we all heard a terrible screaming from the woods (not human), we thought it was a mountain lion or bob cat. So we checked it out with a BB gun, nothing we could see so we started the fire back up, and we went back to sleep. I sleep with a knife the rest of the night.

When I realized that I was one kill away from a Nuke and I ran out of ammo in my dual wield Model 1887s.

                                  • It's not really that scary, I guess, but we went up north to a popular holiday spot a long time ago, and I went down a pretty steep hill on my BMX bike and nearly Shrekd myself because I was a stupid kid who wanted to go fast.

Not scary, but we were on a mountain one night and it started storming. The sloshing mud was so thick and deep - we were so covered in dirt and mud - that all we could do was sit there and laugh at each other like idiots.
