[b]Global[/b] sea level rise means the sea level rises [i]across the globe[/i], not just in pockets.

I hear people all the time say "good i like warm weather" when people talk about global warming. All i can do is shake my head at how ignorant people are. Its kind of like asking why are we destroying the rainforest? The majority of our oxygen comes from there, yet here we are cutting it down. Makes no sense at all.

4 RepliesDon't interfere OP. I need Global Warming, it's all orchestrated by me. Soon Global Warming will reach an irreversible point, and then Florida will be completely submerged underwater. I will not let you stop my ultimate plan of removing the biggest bane on this planet. And since New York City is near the ocean, hopefully that God forsaken city will be removed from the planet as collateral. Once again, don't interfere. I'm doing humanity a favor.

Well, obviously not all of us here think that, but there are enough people drinking the Republican kool aid for it to look that way. Problem is, a lot of people know that changing climates on Earth is natural and they dismiss it as such and that there's little or no need for people and companies to reduce their environmental impact. They just don't get that human activities do affect the climate of Earth very directly. They don't think twice about deforestation or their 450 ppm emissions coming from their car, and, in a way, for good reason. They can't see tangible results in short periods of time, and they think that they're doing nothing wrong, and they don't believe in the idea of global warming or climate change because both are misnomers which suggest that human activity is the only factor changing the environment. We're also not feeling the impact of current human activity, not even from the past 30 years. That's why we have anti-environmentalists using graphs and charts that show that climates on Earth have hardly changed and that human activity is harmless. What people don't realize is that, like I already mentioned, we haven't begun to fully feel the effects of human activity and their true impact on Earth's various climates, and unfortunately, many won't be convinced until they're directly affected years down the line.

You'd think the coastal cities would be lobbying hard for some form of change (perhaps they already do) and given their large populations, you'd think something would come out of such lobbying relatively quickly. Guess one or both of that isn't the case :/

I'm assuming this bill will be or has been introduced this year, so it gets my nomination for Worst Bill of 2014 unless something worse pops up. I don't know anything about North Carolina politics though, so I don't know how far it will go. I personally hope it doesn't get far.

With regard to the actual topic, I remember hearing about that and feeling ashamed to live on the same planet as those people. Unfortunately, we still have some citizens living with an early 20th century mindset of isolationism (if I remember my history correctly). They think that if it happens in other countries, it does not affect them here in Small Town USA™. These are the people who have never traveled outside their state, let alone the country, and live within 10 miles of the town where they grew up. For them, that's their world and anything outside of it is too far to think about. That can also allow the "out of sight, out of mind" method for dealing with bad news to occur. If you'll notice in that story, the people pushing for the legislation are realtors, property and business owners, and local politicians. These people have a much more biased stake in the outcome of the report than the scientists themselves (who they claim performed a biased study that did not use scientific principles). The Outer Banks lives off the income from tourists. If the area is suddenly deemed "unsafe", there goes the lifeblood of the area. Whether those people truly don't believe in accelerated climate change (I quite like that description, thanks you guys) or not is irrelevant in my opinion. This whole issue is a marketing and PR ploy to attempt to safeguard the area's main source of income. They're scared, and unfortunately they chose to stick their collective head in the sand. I would also like to point out the apparent age of the people interviewed. They are not of a younger generation. In my experience, those of us in the up and coming generation are a lot more accepting and open minded, but I also live in a different area so that may have something to do with it.

Climate Change is somewhat of a redundant term however. Of course the climate changes. Nothing in existence stands still. Everything changes over time. And, looking back on the history of our planet, there's been a lot of climate change. Huge changes, in fact. But here's the kicker. These events happened gradually. Slow and steady. It gave time for life to adapt with the changing world around it. We can only guess how the climate will react as a result of the things we've done. Glaciers are retreating at phenominal rates, as is arctic ice in some places. Spots in the world are becoming colder, or hotter. Seasons are beginning to change their established norm and length. And yet, we keep finding results that make us scratch our heads from time to time. The truth is, we view climate change as this destructive thing, with all negatives to it. This is not the case. Nature acts like a balancing scale for every event. Something happens here, something changes over there as a result in accordance. The climate change can be destructive, but it is inherently not a "bad" thing. What is bad, is how fast it changes. And in this, Climate Change should be labled as Climate Change Acceleration. We aren't damaging the climate, no, we are merely speeding up the rate at which it changes. Events that would take thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of years to come to completion are now only taking place in the span of a few hundred years, if not decades. And that is the real problem, because life can't adapt to an environment that is constantly changing back and forth like a light switch. What we face is a true problem, and nobody's buckled down to do the hard thing to stop it. The only thing we can do now is let it happen, and learn from the experience. A lot of bad will come if it, this I can say for sure. But you can't have bad without good. If our society begins to collapse as a result, then perhaps one day we can stand up once more, having learned from our mistakes. And I don't say this lightly either. Of all the users here, I'm probably the closest to the north pole, unless any of you live in Alaska or the northern territories of Canada. In the span of the last two years, we've had three completely abnormal weather events that hadn't happened for over 60 years, that destroyed/crippled the environment, and caused their fare share of deaths. When the abnormal starts becoming normal at an increasing rate, then there is something wrong. But the only thing we can do now is let it hit people in the face. As I've said before elsewhere, today, people don't stand up to anything unless it's already bopped them on the head, and interfered with their life. In our history, Humankind has always been like this. There are the general masses of people, and then there are those unique individuals who stand out from the crowd. They can look beyond what the general rabble cannot, and strive to grow and reach beyond the established boundries. In most cases, the general common mass is amazed by this, and so through demand the inventions of the few prosper and spread. But always, always, there have been those who shunned progress and scientific evidence. It's just that in today's world, the line between the common rabble and the select few is growing more distant. The masses today, dare I say it, are in some regards, less intelligent than their predacessors. And as the line grows further apart, the masses will be granted amazing new technology, but they themselves will not evolve at the same rate as the technology. In fact, as it's already proven, they regress the more their numbers grow as a result of technology allowing people to live longer when natural selection would have claimed them years ago. The more people you have in a group, the less intelligent the group becomes as a whole. And the more technology you feed the group, the easier the group can survive, thrive, and grow, without really knowing why. And now, the common masses have grown rather large. So much so that they can have an influence on things to some degree. And this influence is like a black hole that is created as a result of the masses being so large. It's a downward spiral perpetuated by itself and it's own existence.
