Disclaimer: I know this is probably not going to happen. It's just an idea I had which I think would be really cool.
Now, I know how that sounds. Of course the Beta comes out before the game, but what happens if the events of it predate the setting of the game?
I think that would be a great idea. That would make it so the Beta wouldn't spoil anything while still giving players a taste of what to expect. Our characters (and only the characters, not the gear) could transfer over to the full game when it launches. That would make everything, even the Beta, based in the lore of Destiny.
A Grimoire card stated that we, the Guardians of Light, are actually dead. So if at the end of the Beta we all died, we could hypothetically be brought back in the new game (depending on how it starts that is).
This is all just speculation and theory, but tell me what you think. I don't actually think it's going to happen (I hope it would), but I think it's a cool idea.
Edit: I'm just going to explain my idea a bit more. It wouldn't have much, if any new content other than dialog. It would simply just take place before the game. All the enemies with "??" would be our "research projects". We would find out basic information and feel like it's a big deal. That information would be public knowledge in the full game "because of us". It would make sense on how our character transfer over, unless the beginning of the game is us being turned into Guardians.

I eat ass.
-
Oh, making the beta a part of the games lore? I like.
-
Definitely an interesting idea. Sadly it would be a technical burden to Bungie tho. But I like the idea of the whole "lore" thingy. Like... some people would become storytellers of the times "before the release" ^^
-
This is an amazing idea...
-
That would be amazing!
-
The beta isn't about you. It's about bungie stress testing their content and seeing how the community reacts. They're not going to create something to jerk you off just so that you can have fun with DERSTINEESS!
-
Edited by Saxoclone: 6/29/2014 7:12:35 PMThat would be pretty cool. Of course it would also mean making new content to skew the beta into a prologue story, which Bungie probably wouldn't want to spend the resources on seeing as it wouldn't be seen again. But it would be cool.

This would be a really cool idea. It would be cool to have an emblem reserved for us as well when launch comes signifying that we were part of the back story. People won't be mad over a emblem. Kinda like a war veteran thing. It would be cool if all these over powered enemies rushed over by the safe city where they let us fight them off for awhile, and there's a counter to countdown . When the counter ends, it could go into a little cutscene. That one masked character in the tower could start saying something pretty much like "Many have fallen on this tragic day to keep the darkness at bay, but the darkness will return again...and we can't win without you guardians. Take up arms, and help us battle against our enemies to ward off and reclaim our lost worlds" When new players join the game at launch, us as well, it can show a small montage of the entire fight followed by the cutscene. This then is followed up by the select your guardian race and class menu. Then of course, a real present story pops up with you and the ghost Or whatever bungie has in store for us.
-
As interesting an ideas as that is, it's not likely. In the alpha, we saw that the tower overlooked the last safe city. As you looked, you saw the traveller, dormant, weakened, damaged. The 'dead' guardians were (I believe) killed during the battle with the darkness. If this is the case, the guardians have already been brought back to life (at the time of the alpha). So in order for your idea to be feasible, we'd need to find ourselves in the beta in the time period before this, where the colonies were still human dominated and there were no fallen or other enemies to fight. Then the battle with the darkness could unfold where we all die. Again while this idea of yours has a cool factor to it, it would put us in a time period where there are no enemies to fight, and that wouldn't be terribly fun. Your idea is still creative and interesting just the same.
-
So then people who didn't preorder would be screwed because they would be missing an important piece of story content? Not gonna happen.
-
Another one of "the dumbest posts" I've seen in a while. Seriously....why do people make these grasping at straws idea posts that are just silly. The beta is going to be the same as the alpha with just more of the content to do and maybe the level 8 cap released.
-
While that could be cool, it would effectively turn the beta into a prequel. I don't know how I feel about a prequel being a beta.
-
Seems like unecessary effort to go through for something meant to find bugs and test servers.

The events of Destiny take place after the travelers battle with the darkness so to have something before that would involve no magic/powers and no aliens to fight since the alien races also showed up after the travelervsdarkness so I don't know what that would leave for a game unless we are just standing by witnessing the fight
-
If the beta had different content to the actual game then it simply would not be a beta, considering the idea of a beta is to test content that is included within the game to ensure it's all working as planned (largely whilst under duress). What you're suggesting would be a small stand alone game to test the waters and subsequently would require significant development time, thus would never happen, unless you wanted to pay for that experience of course.
-
I hope that happens. The full game would be new to beta players too. But it's not gonna happen cuz the devils lair was in the alpha and the official launch trailer
-
Not gonna happen. But good idea
-
Sounds like a lot of work just to test content... Otherwise it's a great idea.
-
I really like the idea of it being a mini prequel, but I don't see it happening. Has there ever been a game that has done this?
-
Well, since Peter Dinklage is going to be saying a completely different thing when we see the wizard, or whatever, in beta, sure...it's possible.
-
This would be very cool.
-
This is all just speculation and theory, but tell me what you think
Want to know what I think? I think Bungie needs to get on hiring you because that is an absolutely amazing idea. I could just imagine going to the Tower (hub) and seeing some areas blocked off by construction in the beta, only to be open in the full game. Now look at what you've done. You got me feeling all giddy.
-
If the Alpha was much to go by, there is not a lot of story to give away. If basically a shooter - a fun shooter, but more like Titanfall it has the "idea" of a back story but nothing of any depth itself. Be happy with the shooter.
-
You should edit the title to "What if the beta is set before the game"
