"The YouTuber chalks up the following to the fact that his videos are, essentially, more raw."
"Unlike many professionally produced shows, I think I've established a much closer contact with my viewers, breaking the wall between the viewer and what's behind the screen," he said. "What I and other YouTubers do is a very different thing, it's almost like hanging around and watching your pal play games. My fans care in a different way about what they are watching."
Time to start a YouTube channel.
Edit: just realized the WSJ article is not available unless you're registered. Here are some highlights:
Felix Kjellberg doesn't play a very convincing megastar. The seemingly modest Swede avoids the spotlight, has no entourage and is uncomfortable with success.
But put Mr. Kjellberg in front of a Web-camera and he transforms into PewDiePie, by far YouTube's biggest draw. He has built a base of 27 million subscribers using a decidedly unorthodox approach to playing video and mobile games.
...
The 24-year-old Mr. Kjellberg, who created PewDiePie five years ago, has parlayed his persona into a brand name that pulls in the equivalent of $ 4 million in ad sales a year, most of it pure profit. In December 2012, PewDiePie signed on with Maker Studios, a producer of online content that takes a cut of ad sales. Maker Studios-which counts on PewDiePie as its most important personality-sold itself to Walt Disney Co. earlier this year in a deal that could be worth close to $ 1 billion, depending on certain performance targets.
...
Mr. Kjellberg's career took flight while attending college in Gothenburg, on Sweden's southwest coast. He attended few classes, spending more time at home playing games and uploading to YouTube. After dropping out, he started selling hot dogs. To pad the number of views on his channel during those early days he would repeatedly hit F5 on his keyboard to refresh the browser.
...
PewDiePie's foul language and silly antics can be confusing or offensive to the uninitiated. Mr. Kjellberg said, "I just let go and have fun."
Jens Orjeheim, 44, has an 11-year-old son who is a big fan of PewDiePie, but he fails to appreciate the appeal. "I think there are things in society that can be seen as contributing to a positive development," he said. "PewDiePie isn't one of them." He is critical of the fact that Mr. Kjellberg makes money from encouraging children to spend more time in front of screens and elevating the importance of videogames.
But Vigor Sörman, founder of a YouTubers network in Sweden, said, "PewDiePie is like a cool friend you have and subscribing to him is almost like Skypeing with him-that's why viewers are such dedicated fans."
This post and it's content, is sad
-
95% of his viewers are 8-14yr old cringeworthy minecraft players
-
God I hate that guy.
-
I watched a few of his videos once. I regretted it. I got a serious headache afterwards. I wish people like KYRSP33DY or TheGamingLemon got that kinda money. They actually have humor and don't scream into the mic to try and make people laugh.
-
It pisses me off. Like, most grossly overpaid individuals like athletes at least have to make sacrifices and go through hardships for their profession, or have to be competent in what they do, and then there's THIS asshole who screams wacky sentence fragments into a microphone while playing shitty video games and attention whoring with his webcam making more money than I ever will in my life. Call me bitter, I absolutely am. I give it away for free, streaming to a group of about 20 people.
-
But he doesn't seem to be living in a mansion though...

Edited by Lord Decitron: 6/18/2014 8:17:09 AMFamily Guy is a popular tv show. The Resident Evil movies continue to make money and be popular. Toby Keith brings in tons of cash from his music. Budweiser is the highest selling beer in America. Madden NFL sells millions of copies of the same game every year. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. The lowest approved congress/ senate in American history by a huge margin keeps getting its incumbents reelected. NASCAR is a hugely popular "sport". PewDiePie has a big following on youtube. It is an EMPIRICAL FACT that the masses love shitty things.
-
I think people have misread this a bit. His channel generates $4 million in ad revenues, but there's no way he's personally taking home that much. Youtube and Maker Studios are taking their cut, and it's probably a big one. Youtube alone takes 45% or something. He's making money, but he's personally not making millions on it.
-
Pewdiepie works non stop on his channel and is the funniest editor and youtuber I am subscribed too. He may not deserve 4 mil a year but don't be a hater. Haters. And please forget to subscribe falcon lovers
-
Wow. I usually stop the video right after he says This is Pewwwwwww-Die-Pieeeeeeee. It bothers me about all of this *Grabs gun*
-
good for him. Glad it's working out. He's not really a youtuber I care to watch though. Just not funny to me.
-
How much does robbaz make
-
Robbaz ftw
-
Time to start a YouTube channel.
Yeah good luck with that in 2014.

Edited by DorkLord54: 6/18/2014 6:32:42 PMDon't really like his videos (I prefer Markiplier if only due to him not screaming all the time and dat smexy voice), but I can't really fault the guy, as he does give back to the community via charity. Not to mention he was smart enough to get on the YouTube gaming train before you had to do something to differentiate yourself from everyone else.
-
Those wacky Swedes.
-
inb4 haters
-
It's because he's lived in three (?) different countries that he's so successful. He basically found a loophole in the system. If he had just stayed in Sweden he wouldn't be nearly as popular as he is now. That said, the income tax rate in Italy for his bracket is 43%. If you add on what Google takes from ad revenue you get maybe one million left over (probably less).
-
>this level of mad You guys can say he is bad all you want, but $4million a year says otherwise.
-
Wow guess his fanboys will jizz over that announcement
-
Wow, how do people find him funny? (Excluding bronies, they're just weird as hell.)
-
I guess that's what being the top YouTuber gets you. 4million annually. Damn, very impressive. I've been watching him for a while now and he seems like a genuinely good person who hasn't let his fame go to his head. Glad to see that good guys do finish first.
-
I really dont buy that ''i care about my viewers'' bullshit.
-
That's complete bullshit and anyone who actual believes it is dumb. there's no way you can get away with millions off Youtube.
-
Personally, I never really got the appeal of PewDiePie. I just find him flat out annoying to watch compared to other youtubers. 27 million subs or not, $4 million also sounds way too high of an annual income for just doing YouTube stuff.
-
Omg why? He spews shit and talks like a spazz.
