Although I agree that proximity chat should be in the game you can always send a private chat to people because most everyone is in private chats all the time anyway. Really in any game you to make new friends you have to invite people to a private chat.

That's too much work to find their profile, view it, invite them, and wait for them to accept it, when you could just talk to them right in front of you, like you would in real life.
