Destiny, Bungie’s newest exquisite videogame, is filled with breathtaking visuals and compelling gameplay, and that’s after only playing the Alpha and Beta versions, although there is one major flaw that’s been brought to my attention: Destiny lacks proximity chat, which is the ability to speak with other players whom are near you. Currently, players can wave to each other, dance with each other, and point at things “in a desperate, and futile, attempt at communication” (SoloPopo). Players can’t make new friends, talk about strategies, nor ask for assistance.
With proximity chat, players can get to know each other and share their experiences they’ve had in Destiny. Maybe you just want to compliment someone’s awesome armor and be on your way. Players would be able to talk about how they’ll complete an event or where to find some loot. Imagine trying to strategize by pointing everywhere. Players would be able to ask for assistance during combat. Imagine fighting enemies with a few other players, and when you get cornered, all you can do is point at them and dance for your life.
Destiny is based on the notion of being always-online and multiplayer. If everyone is a mute, then what is the point? As SoloPopo said, “It's ridiculous, and kills the immersion. Why are other players even in the game if you can't interact with them?” Being able to wave and point is fine if you don’t have a headset plugged in, but it should be optional, because being able to speak is a much better alternative.
Proximity chat should be the next feature implemented in Destiny. In GameInformer's interview with Lars Bakken, Bungie's multiplayer lead, Bakken stated "We know that, not just in multiplayer, that in general, when you get into a game with someone that you don't know or someone that you've never seen before and may never see again, they have this power to completely destroy your entire experience and maybe ruin the game for you forever" (Manuch). If another player is being obnoxious and you want to disable proximity chat, you can simply switch between three chat settings: Proximity, Fire Team, and Off. This feature would also require the following settings.
Chat Settings:
Proximity - Chat with players near you.
Fire Team - Chat with your Fire Team. (A symbol appears above your head to non-fire team members which indicates that you cannot chat.)
Off - You can't hear anyone in-game, nor can they hear you. (A symbol appears above your head to all players which indicates that you cannot chat. This setting would also be activated upon joining an Xbox LIVE party and whatever the similar chat system is called on Playstation consoles.)
Orrr
Proximity Chat: On/Off, and you can always hear and speak to your Fire Team.

Here's an additional feature Coffeenator requested in the comments:
One feature I would add to the prox. chat is a kind of karma system where if someone gest muted by some number of people in a period of time that they are muted in-game for everyone except for players in their fire team if they are in one. Over time their Karma would get better and they would be unmuted until they would get muted enough to go over the threshold again.
Yes, especially in the tower. Needs proximity chat badly.
-
Very nice, the way you put it made it seem do able and a safe and fun way for people to communicate. Well done.

Edited by Vexov: 7/27/2014 10:03:30 PMProx chat. I can't help but feel like people that are for prox chat are people who only play console and used only mics to communicate, somewhere along these lines. Its like your too stubborn to use anything else then what the console provides. What is the point of prox chat being an option. - The vast majority doesn't use their headsets as is. - There is probably a even larger decrease in use when simply exploring, in the tower, doing missions. - The tower would be a fking headache. PvP: - People will just have it turned off. * I will vote for prox chat, cause as an option it doesn't hurt me. ** Text chat would be FAR superior when communicating in the tower, zones, and a CLAN of who knows how many people can be fit into. People should be able to afford a $10 keyboard, but if they can't put it in front of them on a table then Baby Jesus help us!!.

Really this is a must some kind of non fire team chat is needed thank you for your post
-
This would be so amazing!!! Bump
-
Yes, however I think this would be better.
-
Wow thats entirely one sided and thats a very good thing! Proximity Chat is a must IMO make it optional and add a mute option and everything should be solid.
-
I want it. To me a social game like this should allow to socialise.
-
I would say no because even with options it will cause server lag. Im a PSN player and frankly I have yet to find any PS game with reliable in game open world chatting. Last thing I want is to be randomly kicked constantly like in DCUO because of chat server errors. If it would cause no lag or other issues then i could care less and would be fine having the options to mute area chat and make it the standard fire team chat.
-
Agreed The more options, the better.

"kills the immersion".... I know it's not the point of the post, but.... Man, I hate that phrase. Frankly, I think Proxy chat is the one that ruins immersion. Nothing says "immersion" like an Awoken Female Hunter talking like Barry White, or Human Titan whose voice is cracking. Now, my question: Does anybody know how complicated it is to add a proxy chat option to a game? Wouldn't they need to test the distance proxy chat would work, plus the quality of the crappiest headset to avoid people being muted on principle of bad quality? Even with an option, it's still 7 seconds or so to turn off or mute, which is 7-12 seconds of time you could be getting back into the fight.
-
This really ties into the public fire team option too. I never seem to work for me when I was playing( so I'm not even sure how it works lol), but having the option to just ask someone headed in the same direction to team up for a bit was something I wanted to multiple times. Thanks for making this thread. I hope they address this further.

Wish this had more attention. if this doesn't happen then the game will have a serious handicap as a MMO or a online game in general.

I think proximity chat is a must have. However proximity voice chat would be a disaster. I just don't believe the majority of players are mature enough for that. Following your suggestion you would likely find yourself either in fireteam chat or with the proximity chat muted all the time. So while I do think your suggestion is a good immediate fix that Bungie could implement I believe I have an obvious long term fix. My belief is that it will be up to Microsoft and Sony to make a permanent fix that will work for not just this game but also future console MMO's or whatever they are calling this game now. The console creators need to make a chat pad similar to the one you have for the Xbox 360. Like the 360 it would snap to your controller except this one would have a button that allows you to open the in-game chat window like you see in other MMO's (this way the chat box is not always on the screen). This would allow you to have a voice chat going with your fireteam while also being able to text chat with people in game. Those chat pads are pretty easy to type without looking once you get use to them. That is just my idea to fix this problem long term. Obviously it would help if Bungie puts the pressure on the companies to get this done.

The game is based on socialization. I don't see how this is an issue in the first place. Bungie should of made this since the very beginning

Edited by Skella : 6/20/2014 12:01:00 AMThink about it this way, you can fly by some dude, blow up all of the enemies he's fighting with one rocket or something, call the dude a -blam!-, and ride off into the sunset. Jokes aside, I really want proximity chat Edit: looks like I can't say that word, but it rhymes with baggot

-
People annoy me. Thus I raid alone...
-
bungie we have spoken what shall you say!?
-
I wanna make new friends!
-
-
Yes, I want an option to turn on/off prox chat. Right now the game is hardly social.
-
Bump!
-
That post was well done. Good sources and information. You have my vote.
-
LOL, why would anyone vote no to this? just mute your guardian or dont accept chat...
-
Yes please!
