The major problems that make it weaker (now beware I'm not a software engineer I'm mainly paraphrasing a developer who was having trouble with Nintendo I don't know exactly where the interview is I can try looking for it) are that it runs on older tech that are not as well equipped to handle the dynamic nature of online play. Also their is more than just servers required to make a connection an Nintendo apparently hasn't invested into these connections. Like I said I'm not a real heavy computer guy so my explanation is a bit vague. Others (such as developers) can better explain with more technical terms.

well you can take it from me as a tech guy (learned the ins and outs of networking for 3 years though i forgot some of it by now^^) that nintendos networking tech should not matter all that much. also lets not forget that there already are 2 activision games running over nintendo network (codblops2 and cod ghosts) plus cod advanced warfare is also comming to wiiu. so the connections are already in place ps: its awesome to see poeple being open to proper discussions and conversations instead of resorting to a pointless screaming contest :D
