Do you think nanobots could have done slight adaptations on Chief's armor between 2 & 3? You notice the hand guards remain square in the current version of Halo 2 Anniversary. This could be speculated as pre-nanobot modification. Though it's apparent Chief doesn't have a smart ai.
But this probably just different art styles between games.

Between 2 and 3? No, Cortana was not with him, and I doubt there was anything on the Forerunner Dreadnaught that would have been able to do so. I doubt there is a canon reason for any differences between his armor in Halo 2 and Halo 3.

I would make the same assumption. Were the nanobots a feature of Dawn or did they exist on the armor itself?
