Most of the time, enemies drop items called Engrams instead of actual armor or weapons. You then turn these Engrams in at a vendor at the Tower to get a piece of armor or a weapon!

Ah, in the alpha videos I watched I'd only ever been looking out for weapons being dropped. Thanks for the informative and quick response!
