The brilliant minds behind Solar Roadways published a video detailing their world-changing project earlier this month, but its language didn’t really grab anyone’s attention.
This new one from creator Scott Brusaw, however, most definitely does not make this mistake.
“Solar FREAKIN’ Roadways!” is filled with passionate excitement and specifically targets young adult minds while explaining the capabilities of this invention, which may seriously be the key to the next stage of human evolution.
All Brusaw’s need is a little cash and we can kiss economic woes, pollution and a whole lot of car accidents goodbye forever.
I'm all for this, in fact, I was speaking with my father about the need for alternative forms of energy. This not only covers that, but puts to usage the one thing we have an (relatively) unlimited source; The sun.

To their website (Hopefully the link works) Theres alot of interesting info in the FAQ section, you should check that out. The page i linked shows how much energy it's predicted to generate :D these guy are really thorough and they seem to know what they're doing. Hopefully their testing ends up successful and the cost to mass produce the panels isn't ridiculous... but it looks like the cost is going to be the biggest obstacle with it.

What a time to be alive.

By default I take a devil's advocate stance to public hype, so I hope I don't come off as too negative by saying this is incredibly impractical and inefficient. The issue with solar isn't that we don't have enough panels, or places to put panels, it's that it's not energy dense and takes a very long time to pay for itself. Add in factors such as inclement weather, the necessity to face the sun, and the prohibitive cost to maintain such expensive equipment over vast stretches of road, and you've got a really absurd premise. I'd much rather see a bigger use of solar panel roofing, and efforts to make them less expensive so they're available to anyone.

Sounds interesting, what about the cost though?
-
Sounds awesome. I may donate something.
-
Just one thing. What's the storage mechanism for this? Solar panels don't really do much for you at night.
-
This is stupidly impractical. I'm not a fan of solar energy, but if we're gonna go with crap like this, we should just make massive, less expensive solar farms in the middle of nowhere.
-
If this is commercially viable, it's going to get huge investment and perhaps even overtake 4th generation nuclear reactors.
-
Okay, can we just divert like 10 billion dollars in our military spending to fund this? This is going to change the world.

Saw this on the rooster teeth side channel, next payday i'm donating to their indiegogo for sure, it'd be so cool if it works out.
