So... Destiny is a shoot and loot game.
Posted: May 5th, 2014.
- I don't see that as a bad thing.
- Comparing Destiny to Borderlands or Diablo 3 is a compliment... and a [i]complement[/i].
- We shouldn't be afraid or overly concerned with Destiny being an ARPG shooter.
Destiny looks fun as hell to me. Seems like it will have a very rewarding (no pun intended) and addicting loot system. Which takes its cues, [i][b]yet learns valuable lessons[/b][/i], from other shoot and loot style games.
Seems like a win/win to me.
We get a new Bungie game with their trademark tight-gunplay [i]and[/i] we get a fun, co-op driven, social gaming experience that steadily earns us new and interesting items. While hopefully carefully avoiding the pitfalls of other games from the same genre.

[b]TL;DR:[/b] Give it a chance. The idea will grow on you. Destiny is Bungie's introduction into the world of ARPG investment games and I'm excited.Seems like they are taking all the best from that genre and cutting out the rest. Making the whole concept more intuitive and thoughtful.
It's one of those things you will ultimately have to either embrace or walk away from and go preorder a copy of Halo 5/COD. But I think many of you will be surprised by how much you enjoy Bungie's take on the ARPG shooter genre.

Bungie saved my life from boredom lol, Yes i am hyping alot over Destiny since it mixes well stuff i enjoy soon 17 days left.. I can already feel the game on my fingertips!

1 ReplyEvery game of the likes of what we are discussing always have a "limit" on how good your weapons, armor, etc. can be as well as currency in which there is a point where the amount you have becomes useless simply because there is nothing left to use it on. The one thing I see making or breaking Destiny is the balance of all these things. I don't want to top out on everything and be left with no room for improvement after a few weeks or a month or so. I hope there is a huge variety of EVERYTHING: weapons, armor, customizable features, stats, shelter, defenses, and whatever else there is. But not too much to where we get overwhelmed (kinda like all the crap on CoD Ghosts).

Honestly I don't understand why people think that the game is a borderlands clone, borderlands and destiny and in similar genres. This is like saying that dark souls 2 is a hard cored, third person version of skyrim. SWords? check magic? check spell in 1 hand sword in the other? check! pyromancy? check! killable NPCs? Check I think I made my point. It's just that people act like this. "What? A FPS that's open world and scifi? How dare someone make another game in that particular genre! Any game that is this genre is just a clone of borderlands! Lets just ignore all the different features that this game has that makes it different from borderlands and just call it borderlands 3!"

I was pleased to hear in the latest video about the "loot stream," where loot is private and only for you and you aren't fighting others to grab it. To drop an example of a recent game, I consider this a big failing in Elder Scrolls Online with regards to things like chests. I gave up on that after lockpicking several chests, only to have other players - who were standing beside me and spamming the "use" key - grab the loot.

4 RepliesEdited by Shadow Iz Me: 5/5/2014 6:16:19 PMLoot games are often good, but we have seen in the past how they can get boring. (Don't give me too much flak for this but it's extremely true.) My example of a boring shoot and loot game is Borderlands 2. I'm not sure how many of you felt this way, but after a while I felt like I was forced to play the game due to the sheer fact that I didn't have the best guns yet, and had no real incentive of fun to play it. This was due to the fact that nothing else in the game was rewarding. I got the occasional excitement when I opened up a chest at the end of the boss fight, but it would quickly go away. There has to be many incentives to play a game, not just one. It has to be through pure joy of gameplay, new content to explore, rewards for play time, rewards for skill, and a player base that is not lacking. There are other things I'm sure, but by the end of Borderlands 2, all I felt I was getting was reward for play time, and small ones at that. The reason why MMO's are so successful is because they have all that, at a high quality, and have the subscription model to easily back up the new content area. I hope Destiny can deliver, but it's hard to create that experience completely.
