A futuristic space suit decorated with glowing geometric designs is NASA's latest prototype in series that its astronauts ultimately expect to wear on Mars.
The new Z-2 was the winning suit in a public vote among three designs, NASA announced Wednesday. Sixty-two per cent of voters picked the design emphasizing "technology" in its look, helping it beat the nature-inspired "biomimicry" option and the "trends in society" option intended to look more like "everyday clothes" of the future. The Z-2 builds on the technology of its predecessor the Z-1, unveiled in 2012, but has:
-A more durable hard upper torso with abrasion-resistant panels on the lower half, instead of the soft torso of the Z-1.
-More advanced shoulder and hip joints to improve mobility, including exposed rotating bearings and collapsing pleats.
-Electroluminescent wiring and patches on the torso that make it glow and may help crew members identify each other during spacewalks.
-Boots more similar to those found on a "suit ready for space."
Materials that can survive the full vacuum of space.
I find this really exciting and It looks as if preparations to leave our Blue Marble are underway. Soooo discuss space and NASA i guess! :D

Kinda wish they were able to get these up and running. Instead of pressurizing with air these would have relied on mechanical pressurization from the semi-rigid ribs in the suit to keep the body pressurized. It'd also be safer because unlike a suit pressurized with air it wouldn't de-pressurize if you poked a hole in it. Last I heard they hadn't got the life support systems integrated yet. Also, we'd look damn sexy. Here's some info for those interested. http://web.archive.org/web/20130327052539/http://mvl.mit.edu/EVA/biosuit/index.html

Edited by Higgy-Doc: 5/3/2014 4:34:27 AMThat looks so sexy. Well nice to see a change anyways. Don't like the Krogan though.
-
HOW MUCH HEAT CAN IT TAKE?
-
We space now?
-
It's the hunchback of notre dame!
-
woooooow that looks so dumb. i'd feel bad for whomever had to wear that.
-
I wonder how much the Russians will charge to fly us to Mars.... - Der
-
I...AM...KROGAAAAAAAAAAAAN!
-
That looks -blam!-ing stupid compared to this.
-
It has the Destiny symbol on it
-
You can fight like a Krogan...
-
"My turn..."
-
Why does it have the Destiny logo on it?
-
They should feel bad, if aliens see us using that, they are gonna laaaaaaaaaaaaugh!
-
I hope space travel or trips to the moon become afforable in the future. I really want to go to space atleast once in my life. I bet that in the future kids would say "I can't believe affordable space travel wasn't possible yet before 2026" :p

Edited by Legend To None: 5/3/2014 2:35:24 AMLet me guess, They are also going to bring an A.i. Rover named Avy, right?
-
can we just do this instead
-
Yeah, I don't want that thing appearing in history books.
-
So they went with the tron suit... Whatever, at least we are advancing.
-
At least they chose the least shitty of the three shitty designs. Seriously, they all look like Vogon/Krogan hybrids and have absolutely no charm when compared to the old Spacesuits. It looks like some shitty new age modern art egg cup holder design monkey got a hold of nasa by the shrektum and made these abominations. I bet these suits will be the reason why we start a war with an alien race, they'll take one look and just start shooting.
-
I don't give a damn how it looks! What counts is that they finally shoot someone on mars
-
Ew. Hope it works, though.
-
It looks dumb, but it also looks far more functional than current spacesuits.
-
That thing is hideous!

EW NO
