AusGamers: Let’s talk player numbers for a minute. A Fireteam has three members of any class, it can be the same class or all different classes -- all that stuff is great. Multiple Fireteams can meet up in a public space and take on a public event, as far as my knowledge goes. Can you talk to me about how many players, at any given time… is it capped at the moment? And also, I know the answer that is going to come from this, but I’m going to ask it anyway: have you guys worked on a persistent number of players in a given server at any one time?
DeeJ: Ok, there’s a lot of questions there. The first thing we’ll jump on is your Fireteam. The Fireteam is the essential combat unit in Destiny. In a strike, it is three guardians -- you and two of your friends, or just you and two people that we will match-make you with -- that is for a very specific cooperative activity. You can, if you want to, go into Destiny as a lone wolf. You can be the strong, silent type -- you can explore the frontier all by yourself. There are certain activities, like the Strike we played, where we will match you up, or let you select your teammates.
Those Fireteams will scale for certain other activities and become larger combat units, but it will always start with three, and then scale up from there. In terms of a public event, there’s no technical limitation as if to say ‘we can only have fifty players in a public event’, but what we are going for, is creating an experience where there are enough Guardians in that space where the event feels exciting, but not so many guardians that you don’t feel as though you’re making a vital contribution to that event.
I think a good example of this is the way that we concluded our E3 demo, with the capital ship that spawns in and overflies the space, and three Fireteams converge, and you’ve got seven players duking it out against a fallen tank, and they’re working together to bring that thing down. You’re aware of every single guardian in the mix, and every single one of them is contributing vital gunfire or guardian abilities, and at the end of it, they’re all doing the victory dance around the destroyed vehicle.
So there was no tourist, there was no wallflower on the outskirts going ‘what am I supposed to do? They’re the ones taking care of everything.’, they really do have to team up together to overcome those incredible odds. And I know there was one more question at the end of that, but I forgot. Im curious to see later on if they have really intense raids that require larger groups Example for my thought process i guess would be say 3 fire teams same raid. Each start at dif areas with dif objectives to meet up somewhere inside the raid to pass on. To open a main door or something. Did i make any sense? Or no? In Bungie We Trus7

Lets say that Bungie puts a cap of no more than 12 Guardians during a PE. If that's the cap and it is reached then in your game you don't even see that a PE is happening. Correct? Also lets say that the cap is 9 Guardians and 7 Guardians already fill the space. That means only 2 of the 3 members in your fireteam can enter the PE. We know that entering a PE is as simple as shooting the enemy. So what happens when the 3rd Guardian of your Fireteam can't enter the PE? Knowing that there is no technical limitation to the number of players will that 3rd Guardian(if they choose to enter, that is) be allowed into the PE? From my perspective what's one more Guardian? I realize that my questions will most definitely be answered come September 9th I just wanted to share my questions and thoughts related to PE. Thanks for reading. See you Starside

good read.

It sounds like -- if you wanted to amass a large amount of guardians (say you know 30 people who play Destiny, at the same time, same server, etc, for example) in one place (maybe the tower, doesn't sound likely outside the tower), you....couldn't. If you really can't, I guess that makes a bit more sense why they refer to the game as a 'shared-world shooter;' it shares your world with a few others, while in 'MMOs' you share a singular server space at all times (in practice), and therefore can amass a heftier group of players in a single location. Definitely more of a controlled gaming experience, but . . . well, if that makes it funner, I guess I'm all for it.
-
So it seems I'll be forced to play with others when doing a Strike...
-
Why is the video sound not working, all im getting is static
-
Interesting! Thank you for posting this!
-
Good stuff.
-
Bump for relevance.

This is going to sound dumb, but does anybody actually know how to pronounce "DeeJ?" I've heard "Deej" and "Deejay," but I don't know what's going on anymore. :/
-
This feels kinda dodged, i wanna know if in patrols you can join up with another fireteam, i have a lot of people who would love to play together but it seems that only in public events, social hub and PvP are the only places this occurs
-
Nice!
-
Bump ;)
-
I wonder what the fireteam size is for raids?
-
Thank you for dropping some knowledge my friend! Now I have some reading to do after work :)
-
I really want to see how the population of the Public areas will work. Seeing hundreds of Guardians in one space, say in the city, might be a little overwhelming.
-
So we were given absolutely no new information and every question was dodged.
-
If I'm not retarded and read that correctly he said the limitation was 50 players in a public event!?
-
Good job once again. Great post.
-
I posted this about 45 minutes ago, lol. Good info though!

Nice stuff :-)

Great info! But I have one follow up, if anyone knows anything or just wants to take stab at it... What happens when the public event ends? After the boss, or equivalent, is dispatched what happens to the fireteams? Can they all meet over the twisted wreckage of a Fallen tank and chat with the other fireteams about the battle, where they are going next... Or does it end and the other fireteams just teleport out?
There are so many different ways to enjoy the action in those spaces. There are cooperative activities, there are story-driven activities, there are competitive activities, and there are end-game activities that I can’t talk about, because they are so shrouded in mystery that it’s a puzzle for you to solve. It’s you and a team of your friends, and we’re going to really challenge your problem-solving, your teamwork, your ability to work together.
Well, that's made my day.

Great Post sir! In Bungie We Trust

Bump.
