It was just a few months ago, we realized more than 1 in 4 Americans believe the sun revolves around the Earth. But before you dismiss us as idiots, there is a new survey we did much better on. Only 4 in 100 believe that smoking is not linked in any way to cancer. Only 6 in 100 doubt that mental illness is a brain disorder. Only 40% completely reject the notion that the Earth is getting warmer. That same 40% reject that species evolve or that the age of the Earth is measured in billions. That means that 60% either agree or are unsure that evolution exists. Sure, that may seem somewhat depressing, but according to my American education, I'm guessing that 60% is something like 9 out of every 10 people that do not strongly agree with a young Earth.
Marsha Brooks, a 59-year-old nanny who lives in Washington, D.C., said she's certain smoking causes cancer because she saw her mother, aunts and uncles, all smokers, die of cancer. But when it comes to the universe beginning with a Big Bang or the Earth being about 4.5 billion years old, she has doubts. She explained: "It could be a lack of knowledge. It seems so far" away.

Jorge Delarosa, a 39-year-old architect from Bridgewater, N.J., pointed to a warm 2012 without a winter and said, "I feel the change. There must be a reason." But when it came to Earth's beginnings 4.5 billion years ago, he has doubts simply because "I wasn't there."
Can't beat logic like that. If a tree falls in the woods and an American wasn't around to hear it, did it make a sound? Absolutely NOT! Use this time to reflect on how awsum and smart we all is hear in USA.

Edited by Choopie: 4/21/2014 9:18:06 PMI still believe in the One Holy True God! :)
Come at me bro...
What? People have differing beliefs in the creation of the universe? Who knew? That question is kinda rigged to fail. There's no excuse for the sun going around the earth question tho.
-
Many Christians I know believe in evolution, this is a good step forward.
But when it came to Earth's beginnings 4.5 billion years ago, he has doubts simply because "I wasn't there."
Straight from propaganda. Wow. Stunning to actually see it that clear.

Edited by Reclamity: 4/21/2014 9:13:36 PMIt's only going to get better from here. The beautiful thing about knowledge is that once you have it, no one can take it from you.

You can't fix stupid....

Still makes me cry a little, but it's getting better.

I can't imagine growing up in a bubble and one day having to hear how poorly educated the rest of the country is. It takes education to get people aware that they need it. How ironic. And on top of it all we have people in power that just don't care. And we'll laugh as the world crumbles knowing the science was right after all.

Ha stupid americans

Good to see we're improving. Hopefully by the time I'm in my mid-olden years, that number will be a supermajority.
-
That’s good, but it’s not hard to improve on shit. We’ve still a lot of work to do.
