"The current climate change is part of a natural cycle" -- The science behind science denial
Despite there being a [url=http://climate.nasa.gov/scientific-consensus]scientific consensus[/url] in regards to global warming, about half of the United States still denies that human activity is influencing the very fragile balance of our atmosphere.
The [url=http://77zero.org/files/2010/01/co2-temperature.JPG]graph here[/url] and above show the close relationship between global temperature and carbon dioxide levels. It also shows that the amount of carbon dioxide has risen to an unprecedented level never before seen on the planet earth. This unnatural rise in carbon dioxide due to human activity has already caused global temperatures to rise. The first and most noticeable effect global warming has had so far is on the polar ice caps, which is retreating our shorelines due to the rise in sea levels. They're also making glaciers disappear, which are important because they supply fresh water to 40% of the world. The effects of global climate change go on and on.
The science is there. The consensus is there. We know it's happening and we know why. What's still missing is public support. Because science can be rather complicated, it's sometimes easier for people to just blot it out and full out deny it. Unfortunately however, ignoring a problem doesn't make it go away. In fact, the United States is significantly behind other countries and does not meet the expectations of scientific literacy among its pupils. Worse, its politicians refuse to vote for legislation that would stop and slow the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
This thread is to help reeducate people who still deny the science of global warming, and to ponder the many reasons why people resort to the denial of this global problem.

14 RepliesDenial comes from the need for continued profits. Most large companies have achieved their size through limiting competition by helping legislators put in barriers to entering the market. The largest, most powerful companies are the energy producers. Oil, Natural Gas, Coal... all have a stake in keeping those barriers in place. So long as they control the market, they charge what they please, and control the supply as they please. "Green" energy is a new, and untested market. Furthermore the focus on renewable or sustainability means that chokepoints in a pipeline can no longer be blamed for price hikes. Moreover, Green energy tends to be decentralized. So it presents a threat to those companies on several levels. Ford, GM, Honda, Toyota, etc... all would retool their factories if we would buy more cars. Electronics manufacturers and other mercantile would all jump on the Green bandwagon if it meant us opening our wallets. But the few control the many. And they have us repeating their lies.

Of course it's natural. We have absolutely no proof that our activity has done anything more than dinosaur flatulence. The only consensus is that climate change has always occurred and will continue for a long time.

I acknowledge that we have an effect on climate, but I also acknowledge that the cycle is more powerful than we are.

8 RepliesHeres the issue with global warming. 1.) it gets damn hot. 2.) ice melts. 3.) higher water levels means less surface to absorb heat. 4.) less heat builds up and it gets cold again. The cycle then repeats.

The rise in sea levels isn't due to the ice caps melting, but I do like this thread. There is evidence of the earth going through natural changes in climate and natural spikes in greenhouse gas emissions, but our human impact these last 100 years or so is leading up to something very catastrophic if we don't get our acts together

At that point if you're still in denial, you're beyond help, and you don't deserve to enjoy the luxuries and benefits science has provided humanity if you're going to consistently ignore a key tenet despite the demonstrable evidence.[/spoiler]
