We all know that in Destiny we will have equipment; weapons, armor and other assorted loots, and we will constantly be finding new pieces of gear and upgrading those pieces over time. Recently I was browsing destinynews.net and came across a gallery of pictures taken during one of Bungie's GDC presentations.
I found this image to be very interesting:

This picture, if it accurately reflects how Destiny's customization and gear progression works, is amazing.
I actually like the idea of starting off with very basic equipment (such as the 'bandana' cloak on the far left), and having it get better over time, or being rewarded with better pieces of gear.
Obviously you can't make a cloak longer over time, but it's still a really intriguing idea. Also, going off of what we've seen so far I'm sure Bungie won't limit your options too much upon initial character customization, because how can you become Legend if you look like completely average and indistinguishable from other Guardians?
What do you guys think? Would you want to start off with very basic gear and have to earn the pieces that make you more unique, or would you rather just be able to jump right in with a character equipped with more variable gear?
Edit: Cloak progression basically confirmed via the Alpha, although not quite to the extent of the GDC images.

The only decent full length cloaks I have seen are only available after Level 8, so it's not like you can wear them yet :(

Hmmm. To an extent, I agree with this, but I hope that full cloaks will be unlocked very early in the game, as that's a huge part of the Hunter class, I believe. Also, if Hunters have progressive cloaks, will Titans and Warlocks have progressive banners and bracelets?
-
I want to see this concept for the warlock and Titan as well
-
It's not how long it is, it's how you use it.
how could you become Legend if you look like an average joe?
Average Joe is my hero, jerk.
lol
I would like to start off with the middle cloak as sort of a beginner feel for my Guardian. He's just starting to learn the ropes and wants to prove his worth in the world. After a significant amount of time he would progress to the last cloak signifying his legend as a Hunter with skill unrivaled by any alien.

I can't wait to have that half-cloak; second to last. I think it looks the coolest. I also hope that the cloak, overtime, becomes weathered looking. Battle worn cloak look, would be sick!

Um..,. No I don't think that was the point. It was strictly for designing purposes, visual progression for gear in destiny has not been confirmed or shown
-
I am interested to see how it will work out, yes.

I prefer earning my gear. It keeps you coming back to the game to get that next piece of armor or weapon. Plus if you are decked out with great gear it signifies that you have been in the shit and gone through a lot. However, I would prefer to have a modest selection of gear at the beginning even if it is only for aesthetics. I don't want to jump in game on day one and see 101 dudes wearing the same shit as me.

Variable gear. Starting off with the same stuff as the next guy a no fun. Letting us start off with plenty of gear to start our journey in would be nice. Not looking for better gear at the start, but more choices for appearance.
