Will FTL travel ever be possible?
What do you guys think about FTL travel? I just don't know if I could fathom it being a possibility. It's one of those things that are taken for granted in every science fiction story ever, but honestly I'm not so sure that we will ever find a way to achieve that type of travel. I might even think that teleportation is more feasible than actually traveling at that speed.
What do you guys think. Maybe some of you understand physics and shit better than me and can explain how we could accelerate to that speed without our brains flying through the back of our skull.

2 RepliesWe can go faster or even as fast as light when we have even the slightest amount of mass. It's simply not possible. Plus when you think about it FTL is pretty slow. Something that is a thousand or a hundred or even 1 lightyear away would still take that amount of time if you were traveling at the speed of light. You would have to go about 16 times faster than light to even make it worth it. Then you have the problem of somehow getting rid of all physical mass. The amount of energy to do both on one ship is so massive that the ship would use up too many resources just to move. Worm holes or warping/teleportation would be much easirer and would require less energy. All you have to do is punch two holes in space time and make sure they don't close.

For one, no science fiction craft ever has ever attained FTL speeds.* Travelling "Faster" than light is a misnomer. translight engines are about exploiting loopholes(Wormholes), or folding space time. [i]*Except maybe Mass Effect. That is indeed an ingenious way around the cosmic speed limit.[/i]

Well anything with mass can't be faster than light so probably not in the way you're saying.

1 ReplyDepends on what you mean by FTL. It is theoretically possible to travel from point A to point B in space faster than light would normally get there, but you never travel faster than light, you distort spacetime to create a shortcut for yourself. As far as we know right now, there is no way to go faster than light. Not even the energy in a supernova can accelerate matter to the speed of light, so I doubt it. Nothing we can harness now or even in the distant future will have more energy than a supernova.

I think that what we will be able to do is endless. I think that its pretty arrogant that only a few hundred years after recognizing gravity as a measurable force to think we can say what is and is not possible. We are toddlers contemplating a jet.

But, maybe it's too early in the morning and I haven't scrambled myself back to normal yet, and I think this sounds like a page out of troll science and physics, but hear me out. Let's say you have a spaceship floating in space, going nowhere. And let's say there's a field around it that traps things in it. So our spaceship has a barrier of atmosphere around it. What would happen if you built the ship like an airplane or a jet, and fired off the propulsion systems? Since there would be a small atmosphere generated and trapped in a small radius around it, would it not move forwards? If so, then because of all thos laws which I'm too stupid to recall at the moment, wouldn't you be able to eventually accelerate to light speed, assuming you didn't crash into something?

I definitely wouldn't count it out. If there's a need for it, and it's physically possible, we'll find a way to make it a reality. What's hopeful is the fact that we know spacetime itself can expand and contract; if only we could some how manipulate it, like with the Alcubierre Drive, our current understanding of spacetime physics would suggest that FTL would be possible.

No. I don't think it's physically possible. And even if it is, it's not possible by any practical means. And even if that were true, humanity won't survive to make it a reality.

Well as far as we know light is the fastest thing in the universe. But i dont think we should worry about that right now. But the idea of slip space by folding time and matter doesnt seem likely either. But we are finding new things every day! So who knows whats in store. Honestly I think we should explore our own planet before we go to the stars

Just think of it this way; there was a time when people thought that humans being able to travel by air was impossible but we overcame that. There's no telling what can and can't be achieved unless we put effort into discovering.

5 RepliesFTL could eventually be feasible in a couple different ways, and much MORE feasible than teleportation. Teleportation is impossible, given the energy requirement to perform it.

It can [i]probably[/i] be a possibility, but chances are very small. Wormholes are the only thing that come to mind. If FTL was discovered, it'll be great.

I dont think faster than light travel could exist but I do think that we may figure out how to split an object down to its very molecules and have the molecules ride on electrons to another location thus being travel at the speed of light or a bit slower. To those that may not understand: Teleportation at the speed of light.

No. You can not go FTL.... That is just a flat out constant. It would take impossible amounts of energy. Not "a whole lot of energy" but literally impossible levels. However warp drives and things of that nature that do get you from point a to point b FTL are being R&Ded right now.
