i unequip everything i got except for my drake sword. i two hand that, and roll/strafe out of the way when he has his shield and club out. i run up behind and get a backstab. THAT isn't the problem. the problem is that he one shots me and he pivots like crazy.

Best advice, like for most dark souls, is to learn the attack patterns. Watch out for his tells! It took me a dozen tries the first time I best him. Did it last with my rogue, no drake sword. Took a while but was an exercise in patience.
