Star Wars VII takes place 30 years after "Return of the Jedi".

6 RepliesI think that a lot of really good stories won't be converted into films. The Admiral Thrawn stories definitely come to mind, those would make fantastic films.

5 RepliesJJ Abrams is doing it. That means for lore savvy people (like myself) that none of the lore will be the same. I mean look at what he did with Star Trek: [spoiler]oh I'm just going to throw Spock back in time so everything changes and I can do what I want.[/spoiler] Part of the reason JJ Abrams went with Star Wars is Disney agreed to let him have more freedom with the plot. Likely, the plot will be very different. Chewie may still be alive and Luke may never have had kids. Maybe he never even met Mara! (yes I'm a Star Wars nerd)

2 RepliesEU won't be used, they've already confirmed this. Lucas himself doesn't even consider the non-movie aspects of Star Wars to be entirely canon anyway, more like an alternate universe. The EU's a cluster-blam!- anyway, and it's so filled in any hope of originality would be lost.

JJ Abrams has already expressly said they're ignoring the Star Wars EU. The existing lore is irrelevant.

I would rather that they abandoned the Expanded Universe. Yes, thousands of hours of work and dedication have gone into it and thousands of people have devoted their time to learning and understanding it, but it's just so gigantic and such a mismatched cluster at this pint. I'm sure JJ Abrams and Disney want to tell a new story with new and old characters, one that would probably not fit into the already rooted lore. It has already been stated the EU is non-canon; it should not be a surprise to anyone if they don't follow it in the new movies.
