Who wants to know how truly messed up UK car insurance is?
Here's a fun fact for all of you non-UKians out there.
I currently drive a 1.6L Volkswagen Golf from 2006. No modifications. 115bhp with a 0-62mph time of close to 11 seconds. I am 21 with a full manual license, 3 years no-claims, and a Pass Plus qualification.
This year my insurance renewal on my Golf will be £720. That's not bad, but only a £70 decrease from what I paid for this last year of cover.
Now, imagine for a moment, if you will, that I came into £36,000 overnight, and bought a decent-spec Volkswagen Golf R TSI. Yeah, that new one with 300bhp that does 0-62mph in less than 5 seconds? That's the one. Top speed of 155mph (limited), but ultra fast for a hatchback.
Any guesses as to how much that would cost me on insurance? £3000? £2500? £2000?
No. £720.
