You've probably heard about how the British surveillance agency, GCHQ, intercepted millions of Yahoo webcam images, probably in an attempt to figure out who asks questions like these (other than bored trolls).
As it turns out, they also evaluated the usefulness of Kinect as a surveillance tool as part of the Optic Nerve program but did not implement it. The GCHQ found that Kinect generated "fairly normal webcam traffic" consistent with their efforts, but it's possible that Kinect didn't make the cut due to relatively low volume or low efficiency.
For their part, Microsoft obviously stated they were not aware of the evaluation and are looking into the matter.
The cynics among us would roll their eyes at the mention of new revelations of government surveillance, since we've always known the government was monitoring our every move. Still, new information about webcam surviellance and unprecedented collection of metadata should perhaps make us a little wary of the many tools at agencies' disposal.

Being concerned about the surveillance capabilities of Kinect while having a mobile phone in your pocket is about as stupid as spouting the virtues of being vegan while wearing leather shoes...
-
I'll just leave this here.
-
They're not spying on us. I don't like being lied to when they say they won't watch me masturbate to Xbox One internet explorer porn...
-
It doesn't surprise me, no matter how illegal anything is they always seem to be watching us, waiting for us to make a poor move or say something bad and get swept up in a van and forgotten about. Hypocritical cunts. Know what would be better than "watching" what your people are doing or not doing, being a better government and not having to worry about people uprising and throwing you to the wayside.

If they want to watch me play halo in my pajamas that's fine with me

Edited by Verios44: 3/3/2014 1:32:53 AMSeeing every smart phone is auto tapped, as well as anything with a speaker, mike, camera or sensor of any kind attached to any form of internet is eyes and ears for intelligence organizations. Of course the kinect is tapped if MS wants to know or admit or not, but also the PS eye is as well. So if your that paranoid than ditch every piece of tech you own and find a small island in the middle of the Pacific. The age of easy privacy is closing rapidly both for the better and worse
-
I think I remember reading that MS told them and the NSA to go -blam!- themselves. Either way, is anyone really worried that the government is watching a bunch of fat 20 year olds playing Skyrim in their underwear?
-
Someone explain this to me please.
-
Of course. It's a perfect surveillance tool! But it's never gonna happen.
-
The only people that should care are those planning acts of terror.
-
I like it when they watch. It makes me feel naughty
-
I have no webcam, I have no kinect, I only have a microphone that I unplug when not in use.
-
Those little strips in the new $100 Bill are not for counterfeit.
-
Never really understood the whole issue about this, if they want to watch people sit on a chair and play video games go for it, it'll only end up being a waste of time.
-
It's funny that people go on about being watched by the kinect though you're being watched right now on your computer.

Edited by nao: 2/28/2014 5:26:06 PMI feel so safe now. Thank you govt. Kinect is useless to me since I have this thing called a controller. I refuse to buy one because I don't want it. The fact that it's a high powered camera and mic, connected to the Internet, aimed at my living room, and always listening was just a creepy side note.
-
Quit crying. Who cares. If your doing something you don't want anyone to see then don't buy anything with a camera attached to the internet. No one else cares
-
I don't think spy agencies are too used to being watched themselves.
-
All they would find at the end of my kinect camera is a fat man drinking a mug of coffee, playing a game.
-
What is it I keep saying? Laptops Tablets Smartphones webcams Ipods All have camera's and microphones but somehow the Kinect is the only thing to worry about despite the original Kinect being perfectly fine. Anybody who claims it's just the Kinect and is a reason not to buy one/the console/trust microsoft is an idiot.
