Teen gets 10 years for fatal Knockout punch
[i]A Stearns County judge sentenced 18-year-old Jesse Smithers to 10 years on Thursday. Smithers admitted to delivering the deadly punch in a St. Cloud alley almost a year and a half ago.
On Sept. 21, 2012, Colton Gleason was walking with friends when a car pulled up, and Smithers got out and punched him. Colton died after falling and hitting his head.
His father, John Gleason, says the pain, bitterness and hurt his family feels did not go away with the sentencing of the man responsible for his son’s death.
“We’ve been given a life sentence by this cowardice attack and murder of our son,” John said. “He’ll serve very few short years and he’ll be back out again, and our son is gone forever.”
John says his son was the victim of a deadly “knockout game.”
If he doesn’t commit any offenses in prison, [b]Smithers could be released in about five years.[/b][/i]

Knockout is a perfect example of how "fun and games" can evolve into something lethal. I think 10 years is short, but if you're giving him only 10, at least don't give him the option to possibly get out in 5 years.

That sucks.. Knowing only what you wrote in the thread, it would seem that Jesse Smithers should be in jail longer, right? Murder is murder, but considering the crime was committed by somebody who was at the time a minor, its a little more complicated. Still, how odd that by 28 you could have already served a life sentence for killing somebody? If he some how got an education while in prison, he could leave with quite a bright future ahead of him.

That's a horrible situation. I'm guessing he got manslaughter which I think the maximum maybe 10 years. Can't get him for murder if he never intended to kill the guy. Died when he fell to the ground my god that sucks.
