• as much as I like PVP... its really repetative, it is mostly by virtue of its nature the same thing over and over and over again unending. Story provides an emotional experience, iconic experiences, information on the story and universe.... I will always prefer story over multiplayer, but that does not mean I hate multiplayer... not by any means... In the end, I have to look at the games that tried "only" using multiplayer in the past, such as brink and shadowrun... visually interesting.... but ultimately unfulfilling. I will chose story... because I want to know the glory of the universe that bungie has created, not loiter in its backyard.
In the end, I have to look at the games that tried "only" using multiplayer in the past, such as brink and shadowrun... visually interesting.... but ultimately unfulfilling.
Each for their own reasons and flaws that have less to do with the fact that they were "MP only" and were instead simply magnified by how both single player campaign and multiplayer coop/cometitive occupied the same space.
Brink for example was playable as a single-player offline game so I don't think this argument stands, it was simply a single-player campaign designed to be replayed on the same terms as the gameplay designed for multiplayer. But its lack of a lobby system meant inviting friends to play with you after a "campaign" (bot) or "competitive MP" (matchmade) game had already begun. That was ultimately its downfall, not the gameplay itself. Shadowrun suffered mainly from being such an early 360 title.
And, all that said, I'm more excited for Titanfall right now than for Destiny's PvP, hands down. Which is why I wouldn't vote PvP for Destiny at all based on what we know about its PvP (precious little). That "unfulfilling" statement might be subjective for you, but if by "ultimately" you're attempting an objective argument, the fact I might end up playing Titanfall more blows a hole in it– here I am passing on "the complete package" in terms of the mode I and many other players undisputably play most –PvP– for a PvP-only – or "Campaign is Same as Multiplayer" or whatever you'd like to call it – game. In any case, since 7th gen systems will only be getting the series first installments, both series will be multi platform (TF on Xbox/PC, Destiny on Xbox/PS), and both are first person shooters that require internet connections (and Xbox Live Gold on that platform) to even play, it will be interesting to see the relative staying power of both games among the users that overlap. A year or two from both title's launch dates, between sequels, which will have the higher populations among each's applicable platform? (limited to Xbox One/ 360 of course, since including PC or PS would be unfair to either). That doesn't mean one game "wins" of course, if you people enjoy a game that otherwise wouldn't exist then inarguably this is a good thing and we as players and consumers win. Those are just metrics I'd propose as evidence to try and answer the question you've raised:
Which is "more fulfilling" (most hours played total? highest peak population? most sustained population of players over time? has the most heavily invested players?): an FPS that focuses entirely on "campaign/MP in one" style gameplay; or, one that splits focus between PvE/story/campaign and a PvP/MP game while sharing investment elements of both – if both games are the best examples in their design philosophy?
