They obviously didn't to too bad a job though, as it stole players away from lolReach and they did not return. Look at the online UU counts and you can see more individuals play H4 over lolReach, if it was that bad surely they would have returned?

Because it's a poor Halo game by Halo standards.

The problem with halo 4 were the updates that followed its release. When halo 4 came out it was great, Sure the typical fix was needed but overall it was good but, 343 focused in bringing COD and Battlefield gamers and totally forgot what made the halo series so amazing. All updates where weapon fixes, lack of memorable maps, custom games restrictions (no infection mode, flood is hardly fun, etc) Spartan ops didn't get better story and the complaints from halo fans were so big they literally jumped ship back to halo reach and halo 3. I felt dissapointed with halo 4 because of so many promises but none of them were given. Hopefully halo 5 will fix this and 343 will balance bringing new players at the same time keeping their loyal fans in the game.
