Does America have an issue with "Winners and Losers"?
Let me explain what I'm talking about. As of awhile now, at least going back several decades, it's starting to seem like the innovation and ambition that at one time made America a powerful country, is gone and nothing but a candle's flame now. One such problem I think we have, is the "so long as you had fun" mentality.
Say you're in a race for a Triathlon, you don't do so hot, and you don't place highly, but you get a medal and a trophy for "participation." I believe this sort of mentality is making this country weaker, we're telling our kids and they're telling their kids that so long as you try your best and have fun, that everything will be given to you because you tried. Instead of actually going out and working hard and practicing and getting back out there, and getting what you want through determination and effort, you can instead put in less of that and get the same result because we don't want anyone feeling excluded or down and out.
So, do you all think that we and most likely many other countries have an issue with rewarding participation instead of actual hard work and diligence?

I completely agree. No awards for participation. Only winnerd should get rewards. Kinda' like the Halo 2/3 ranking system in comparison to the progression ranks of Reach/4 and all the mediocre games I know of.

Yes, we seriously have this problem at least in the public schools. Then once they graduate from college, they learn that we only really care about the winners. The winners in the school sports get signed into the major leagues. The winners of scholarships are the ones who usually go to college and become somebody. Oh wait...there's welfare for the losers so they can continue to be mediocre and live on the successes of the winners.

2 RepliesI blame parents' groups ending dodgeball. When I was a kid, there were winners and losers. It was great when you won, and it sucked when you didn't. Then, one year, parents got together and said they were tired of consoling their little perpetual losers. Rather than teach them to win, they decided it was better (easier) to just get rid of the things that told their little bundle of joy, maybe he or she wasn't the best. The first target was dodgeball. After all, it teaches predatory behavior and the strong overpowering the weak, right? Now most of you in the current generation are pansies that can't take any responsibility for your own failings, which are adding up, cause you are number 1 after all...

Yes. If everybody wins, even if some lose, then truly wining matters less.

America is like that spoiled 5 year old that throws a really bad temper tantrum when it doesn't win or get what it wants. I should know. I'm an American, probably the only one that can accept losing. [spoiler]It's not like I ever win anyway.[/spoiler]

Dunno bout the US, but with sports in NZ you have competitive teams and non competitive teams. For cricket we have, Prems, A's, B's, and reserves. I float around in the A's and B's because I'm competitive - and anything in those grades is a competitive environment where people play to win. Reserves is for people who... well suck, or just wanna play for fun - and you get some really outstanding players in that grade occasionally because they don't feel like playing in such a 'winning is everything' environment. I sometimes play in the low grade because it's easy which makes it fun, but there is no pressure about winning or losing because people don't really care. So I guess it simply depends on what grade you play in. At the end of the day, if you aren't having fun then why are you playing?

Participation medals are a terrible idea. There's no incentive to win!

Yup, and we see it all the time with people saying "Hey! That person has a lot of money! We should have a lot of money, too!"

yeah, being a loser sucks but that's life.

Same problem over here in oz people just want to try they don't want to practise get better because they have been told that you don't need to. If you want to good at something you have to practise practise and more practise.

This is less about the United States, and more about parents thinking that there child is "special" and not simply like every other child in existence.

5 RepliesI agree with you, to a certain degree. I do think that in our attempts to make things "fair" we are hurting things. However, it sounds like what you're saying is "do it right or don't do it at all" and I don't think that's a message that should be sent either. I think we should be encouraging people to try just as much as we should encourage them to succeed.
