So I just finished eating a potato I cooked in the microwave for lunch, but I damn near lost my potato will cooking it. I'm completely cooking illiterate, so I went online for some easy/fast methods for microwaving a potato (I would bake it, but I was hungry and wanted it fast). I was told to wash the potato, get off the little "eyes" and then prod it with a fork before putting it in the microwave. I did all that and than I was told to put it in for six minutes.
I checked back at three minutes and my potato was damn near ready to explode. I left it out for a few minutes, cut it open and it was cooked perfectly. Why the Hell would I have kept it in there for six minutes?! Anyways, how do you guys microwave your potatoes (if you do cook it that way) so I can learn what NOT to do next time (AKA tomorrow when I'm hungry again).

Microwave wattage and potatoes both vary greatly. There's a big difference between cooking a huge, brown potato in a 600W microwave and one of those little red russet potatoes in a 1200W microwave.
