The mute function is lazy moderation. I have seen this community when it was better. There were more rules and higher quality posts. Now that there are less rules, and the mute button, people can get away with posting lower quality material and not get banned. That leads to a saturation of shitty posts and a lower concentration of high quality posts.
I don't like it that there are people who are willing to filter out the things I say just because it makes them annoyed. I think that it impair's people's perspective of reality to hide the things that others say. I think it doesn't make any sense that it was implemented.

To put this in perspective, browsing through the forums, one will often see impersonators, posts littered with ill-informed opinions, or posts so obviously created to spark controversy and hate that, at points, they overwhelm what many would consider to be topics of actual discussion value. I would not want to have to read that particular user's post regardless of the existence of a mute system. If the user in question repeatedly creates posts of such a nature conforming to the aforementioned commonalities in the paragraph above, I see no reason why I should waste my time reading their posts when they have not demonstrated that they can post anything I would want to read. The mute system works, and combined with the revamped moderation system, offensive or inappropriate content on both a personal and global level is effectively dealt with.
