The mute function is lazy moderation. I have seen this community when it was better. There were more rules and higher quality posts. Now that there are less rules, and the mute button, people can get away with posting lower quality material and not get banned. That leads to a saturation of shitty posts and a lower concentration of high quality posts.
I don't like it that there are people who are willing to filter out the things I say just because it makes them annoyed. I think that it impair's people's perspective of reality to hide the things that others say. I think it doesn't make any sense that it was implemented.

They would likely ignore your posts anyway.

Edited by UphillMercury: 1/19/2014 5:05:21 PMI would hardly call the mute system an impairment of one's perspective of reality. To put this in perspective, browsing through the forums, one will often see impersonators, posts littered with ill-informed opinions, or posts so obviously created to spark controversy and hate that, at points, they overwhelm what many would consider to be topics of actual discussion value. I would not want to have to read that particular user's post regardless of the existence of a mute system. If the user in question repeatedly creates posts of such a nature conforming to the aforementioned commonalities in the paragraph above, I see no reason why I should waste my time reading their posts when they have not demonstrated that they can post anything I would want to read. The mute system works, and combined with the revamped moderation system, offensive or inappropriate content on both a personal and global level is effectively dealt with.

This rule promotes intolerance in a community. Having to look at someone's posts who you don't like is an insignificant problem that people should learn to deal with. This rule is killing tolerance.
-
I don't like it that there are people who are willing to filter out the things I say
If you say things worth reading, this won't happen.
-
If I don't want to see offensive posts or topics I shouldn't be forced to see them. The mute feature is the best.
-
Consider this. Maybe a person says one thing that a person finds offensive and doesn't want to see anymore, what if that person who was muted turns around and says something really thought provoking? That person who muted the other person will likely never know. Implementing a mute is generally something that doesn't take much consideration. If someone says something offensive then that is what moderators are for. I think it's our differences that really bring people together because what kind of world would this be if we just filtered people who are different? Not the kind of world I would want to live in.
I think that it impair's people's perspective of reality to hide the things that others say.
But the real reality is that this is a website. This is the internet. That is reality. The real reality is that in life, not everyone will listen to you. Consider this, when you're in a public space like a restaurant, do you listen to every conversation that is taking place at the same time under the same roof? Of course not. There are private conversations happening everywhere and you would drive yourself crazy trying to interpret everything. Muting is blocking out unnecessary noise. It doesn't always mean that someone broke the Code of Conduct, you said it best:
I think it's our differences that really bring people together because what kind of world would this be if we just filtered people who are different?
We would live in a world like our current one. That's the reality. If anything, the mute function gives us a better perspective of reality. You have the right to voice your opinion. I have the right to choose to listen (or not).

lol the op's a liar.

Muted. Reported. Disliked. Police called. FBI notified. CIA alerted. NSA monitoring. Military on standby. Snipers at the ready. Fryers revved.

Hell , you just post everywhere don't you ? I haven't been on in like 4 months and all I see is "loaf " posting like a attention whore , holy shit

BEGINNING TRANSMISSION: (Low melodious hum.) The concept of muting would be used with or without it being an available feature. People would simply scroll past your comments and go about their business. Being able to mute makes it more convenient to filter out the filthy garbage left behind by the unwanted. Like it or not, it is here to stay. ENDING TRANSMISSION:
-
Hell no.
-
we should take the mute function and push it somewhere else

I like being able to mute people who ruin my experience here on b.net. I don't come here to debate. I come here to talk with like minded folks. If someone is gunna make a big deal out of my opinions and nag me to death I will gladly mute them.
-
I haven't muted a single person.

Edited by Big John: 1/19/2014 3:44:08 AMBeing informed of opposing views is important IMHO. I am thankful for user control mute and not dependent systems of algorithm like Facebook or Google... that's just more isolation. Now that's messed up!
-
I like having the power to finally silence those who oppose me.
-
Well, I mute for three reasons. 1.) Trolling 2.) Spamming/Shitposting 3.) If you are exceptionally stupid/ignorant You are just mad because a number of users don't like what you post and choose to avoid it. Maybe if you didn't make so many threads...

I haven't noticed you until recently. You make a lot of terribad threads plus you seem really annoying. I've considered muting you multiple times.
