# has many names. Number sign. Pound sign. Hash. Octothorp. If you tag something by using the #, it's called a hashtag. (The tag is the hashtag, not the # symbol. That's just the Hash part) But it could have just as easily been called a poundtag. Hashtag just rolls off the tongue easier.
