Something strange is happening to me.

I think I'm growing out of gaming. (Or rather, getting bored of it.) Perhaps it's just a bland patch in my beloved hobby, the inter-generational lull that I last time filled with fighting Tartarus over and over, but I seem to be getting increasingly bored with my games. I no longer have a regular friend group to play with, and indeed all the gang from back in the day between 7 and 3 years ago has either moved on to Steam and/or PSN and/or real life, so that's had a big impact on my enjoyment levels and activity in recent years. I usually spam H4 multiplayer, and whilst that is damn good fun (now's not the time, haters), I can't do it forever. So I've been revisiting old friends from years ago, such as Peggle, Ms. 'Splosion Man and BioShock 2. Even then, the novelty or thrill soon wears off. What am I doing instead? I'm not entirely sure. It's not like I'm being any more sociable than usual right now. I have been on Youtube and Netflix and such more. Christmas has been a big occupant (?) of my time lately. I've been having a blast on Black Mesa: Source, and have nearly completed it (maybe if my laptop didn't switch to 5fps during the final fight in the Lambda Core, I'd have made it by now), so there's that too. Maybe it's happening, at long last. Maybe I'm growing up. The only announced game on the horizon that truly excites me at the moment is Destiny (we'll see how Obduction goes, especially in the collective wake of Myst V and Uru). Show me Half-Life 3 and that'll be up there too. It's just strange, that's all. I'm not sure I'm unhappy with it. But I'm not sure what to do about it either.

  • Buy a Nintendo console, seriously. I was in a rut until I bought my 3ds and now I have my Wii U. I only use my ps3/360 for Netflix now, even then I can use the gamepad as an internet browser.

    • It's the same here for me amigo. I think it's partially due to me moving on into an elderly gamer, I analyze things more, am more clear cut about my tastes and know exactly what I'm looking for. And, as of late, there's been none of that whatsoever. My friends list used to be active years ago, and I had a regular group of people I said hello to every day, and we all played the same game together. Over the years we broke off as new games came out that split us up, and eventually most of them disappeared. One went off to university, two became big-time druggies, one is missing because he got the One and me and all the others didn't, and one had a paradigm shift and up and sold his xbox on the spot. That currently leaves one of the older ones I've been around with for a few years, and one that I met a few months ago. Of the friends list I used to have, maybe around 43, I removed a massive chunk of people because I knew in my heart they would never come back on again, and my list went down to 15 people. Of these 15 people, I talk and spend time with around 4 of them. As for the others, these are people that are still on, in decreasing time spans, that I stop buy to say hello once every blue moon, and that I can't bear to remove. 4 people. 4 god damn people. And, with things so different now than they were just a few years ago, I can't throw myself into matchmaking, join a customs game with some dude I played with in a match and become friends and meet other people, because A) Everybody is in a god damn party, and B) As far as I can tell the old timers left, leaving us with the current entitlment generation. I bought my games, and I bought them for the right reasons. These games can last me a long time. But in terms of social interactions, I'm god damn lonely. And there's not much I can do about it. I think gaming will always be in me, albeit varying degrees in my life as things change and become more a priority, it will always be there. I remember every friend I ever had on LIVE, and I remember everyone that passed on that I lost, the feeling of knowing that I won't likely ever hear from them. It really does pain me to think, that after all this time, out of all those people, I'll be the last man standing.

    • It's probably not because you're growing up. Games are for everyone. It's because we're at a stagnation point. The modern military shooter formula has become rampant, and in turn caused many popular series to become easy and "accessible". This isn't just for shooters, though. I don't remember the last real challenge I had in a game, save for moments in the Arkham series.

Lack of friends to play with puts a damper on my gaming. I'm a social player.

        • Well, I am not growing out of gaming yet. I am going to play games my whole life. It just keeps getting better and better. But recently I feel so.. tired of everything. I also love to draw and create comics. But recently I am just like "Nah.. why bother?" I just feel like doing nothing because it is either boring or there is no point in it. Then I just want to sleep.

        • The Xbox One has definitely renewed my interest in the console gaming scene, but yeah I feel you. I've been playing a lot more guitar and spending more of my time on YouTube than I have playing video games.

          • It's not you, it's the industry going stale. AAA titles are just the same thing over and over again with slightly better graphics and brain dead action. Try something different, delve into the indie market , re-evaluate and think about what you enjoy in games.

            • Eh, tastes definitely change as you grow. I for one have all but grown out of multiplayer gaming and can only find enjoyment playing singleplayer RPGs on my PS3, whereas I used to be an addict to competitive online PC shooters.

            • It isn't because you're growing up. Gaming is becoming shit. MSNBC has the same opinion as me. Gaming is becoming less creative, remember the ps2, xbo, gamecube era? Ye I do, it was the best time..the games were creative and unique. The games focused on fun not gimmicks or graphics. Last gen (Wii, Ps3, X360) was really good up until around 2010 imo. All the games were creative until then, Halo 3, Forza, Bioshock, COD 4, left for dead 2, littlebigplanet they were all creative and unique. They didn't focus on trends. They wanted money of course but they tried to make their games stand out from the crowd and make their fans happy. Then when MW2 (that last good COD) came out many gamers started playing shooters only, specifically Halo/COD. Many game developers were stingy and followed this trend of making cod clones. Now the creative games and non shooters get hidden by all the cod clones. Although less cod clones have been popping up this gen and creativity is coming back into the industry. People have also become more accepting of non shooter games too. I can't wait to see how this gen will turn out. Haha, hopefully Halo 5 is like a traditional Halo game too (but that isn't the point). Few creative games have released and made it to the top during the cod clone era such as Skyrim, Dishonored, Littlebigplanet 2, Reach (I liked Reach, deal with it), Far Cry 3. We won't be seeing too many games from next gen yet, probably a year or 2 later, around the time Halo 5 will release. That is when the "boom" will happen. COD is also dying out which is a good thing as there will be less cod clones and more creative games. I might be switching to PC though, they seem to have lots of creative games, especially since Valve is one of the best game developers out there although Bungie another creative developer won't be releasing Destiny on PC. :( The only thing I will hate about this gen is MICROTRANSACTIONS!

                •
Maybe I'm growing up.
I hate when people say that 'cause it implies the kinds of fallacious ideas that one isn't truly "grown up" simply 'cause they play video games. Anyway, try some different genres, that might help. I too am pretty bored of gaming (doesn't help that my buddies essentially ditched me) so I'm trying to slowly get back into playing fighting and racing games more since I hardly play them.

                • Gaming has no age limit, OP. I suggest you have a break from it or try a game different to the norm you usually delve into - perhaps an entire new franchise. :-)

                    • I'll never grow out of gaming or get bored. It's a huge part of my life. I play on console and steam/origin with plenty to catch up on. I've been quite enjoying the older games like Jedi knight II as well. Heck I even played Halo 3 yesterday and it's still premium fun and that game is now 6 years old. Anyone that tells someone else to 'grow up' and move on from gaming is a fool and does not understand gaming is not a children's hobby. Gaming can be enjoyed by all and has no limit on a persons age. You shouldn't have to feel the need to quit or grow out of gaming. You can stay for as long as you want and taking a break isn't a bad thing either. I find when I take long breaks from multiplayer games I come back refreshed and ready to roll.

                      • I'm with OP. I don't know if it's the lack of releases, the transition into next gen, or the shitty titles of recent (GTAV, Bioshock Infinite) but I'm spending less and less time playing games.

Meh. Was feeling the same way the last couple of years. Skyrim was about the only game I played consistently. Was kinda just bored with gaming in general. Ended up trying some new platforms/series this year and all was right with the world. I've got a pretty deep backlog now (rocking some Wind Waker HD at the moment). Plenty of games I'm look forward to in 2014. Almost too many really. Sometimes ya just need to switch things up. Change of pace and all that. Variety is nice...if a bit expensive. Or like others said take a break. The games aren't going anywhere and will only get cheaper. At the end of the day though its just a hobby. If there's games I want to play then cool. If there isn't, well then there's plenty of other things to spend my time on. Vidya gaems have their good and bad years, but I doubt I'll ever 'grow out' of them (or would want to).
