So we've been covering this topic loosely for a bit now in my basic (VERY basic) freshman science course. I heard from multiple sources that the global temperature has increased 1.8 degrees Celsius since the 1800s, and that the standard set for an Ice Age is roughly 5 degrees Celsius below normal temps worldwide.
If we continue on this trail of consumption, burning more and more and more resources, destroying the environment, and using cheap, dirty energy how much longer will it take for everything to go to shit? You've surely seen the news coverage in the Chinese cities like Shanghai and Bangkok recently, the people can't even breathe their own air. Already, much of the pollution is finding its way overseas on air currents and coming down on the west coast of the USA.
So at what point does it no longer become sustainable? When does the globalized ("Americanized" might be a better term) economy fall to pieces?
Do you guys have any thoughts on this issue? If so, please try to keep things civil.
EDIT: apparently half of bnet believes that global warming is a hoax.

It's a serious problem that is not fixable anymore. We have allowed big business to ruin our environment along with the people that live in this world. We are agreed thanks to the governments all over the world.
-
Anthropogenic climate change is a scientific fact, backed by enormous amounts of evidence and massive scientific consensus. The issue here is that non-experts believe they understand climate better than climatologists. No one in their right mind would contend that they know more about theoretical physics than Hawking, but when it comes to evolution or climate change, topics that have been attached to political agendas for decades, suddenly everyone is an expert.

Gobal warming is real... really stupid.
EDIT: apparently half of bnet believes that global warming is a hoax.
Apparently half of them are idiots. That isn't surprising.

I believe in climate change, and global warming doesn't seem like a ridiculous notion. But what I do find ridiculous is supposing humans are the main cause. Look at the damn ice cores, people, we've had HUGE swings in temperature that had nothing to do with us.
-
9/11 caused global warming
-
The "results" that support it are fabricated and/or manipulated. For example: the sensors were deliberately placed near hot area, such as next to heating units. Quite a few of them even had light-bulbs inside of the boxes.

ITT: Republicans and libertarians believe they are more intelligent than scientists
-
You don't know your stuff... No legitimate scientist believes in global warming... They call it climate change, because all effects are localized. Why do they call it climate change? Because the climate has to change somewhere due to people. It's to save face.
-
It is a hoax the temperature has gone down and some ice caps are coming back.
-
I acknowledge the existence of man-made climate change and the damage it has caused and will cause if we don't change anything. What we should do is ween ourselves from fossil fuels and start using nuclear power and we should put more funding for research alternative energy and cold fusion.

I live in the dead centre of North America, in Saskatchewan, in one of the coldest major cities in Canada. I'd very much like it if it got warmer :)
-
Studied the subject extensively. Trying to have a reasonable conversation about it on Bungie is probably impossible. It comes down to this: -It is real.
-
There is absolutely no proof or consensus on climate change. We know it is a natural occurrence which the main driving source being the sun. People are pathetic when they claim to know something they don't comprehend. This species can really be arrogant. We have trouble predicting the weather two days in advanced but all of the sudden we're certain we're causing the planet's destruction? Give me a freaking break. We give ourselves too much credit in thinking we are a threat to this planet.
-
i dont feel well enough informed to give a definitive opinion on the subject, but i have my doubts that humanity is a significant contributor to the problem

The amount of trolls in this thread is astounding.
They still call it "global warming?" I thought they changed it to "Climate Change" because the Earth isn't getting hotter?
-
Doesn't exist
-
If Global "Warming" is real, then why am I cold in the mornings when I go to work? I'll believe it the day I no longer feel cold.
-
I thought that the icecaps up north were actually getting bigger. Also, the planet just came out of an ice age so...
-
I think it's bad.
-
Hey, even if it is just a natural cycle that takes thousands of years to do anything, doesn't mean we shouldn't recycle.
-
It's a crock of bullshit and anyone who believes it is a blind bat. It's a cycle of the Earth and its temperatures.
-
As I say every year and will continue to: Global Whining.
-
I don't care about the whole "Global Warming is bad", "Climate change is happening, it's all our fault!!!", "Muh polar bears". The Earth has naturally gotten warmer and colder over the course of it's age. This was still going to happen at some point in the future. Why does it matter if it happens now and not in a thousand years.
