I was perusing Yahoo and came across this article and decided to post it on here as I feel he makes a pretty well formed argument and have been of the same opinion for a couple of years, but have never seen anyone (nor been able to myself) word it as well as him.
I was going to provide a snippet of the first few paragraphs, but the site wouldn't let me highlight anything (that or my pc is being stupid) anyway, here's another link but be warned it's a bit lengthy.
Thoughts?

If Nintendo would release there whole game catalog via there market place for different fees they would make so much money. Imagine being able to play some classic NES games via download for a small fee
-
If people want to play Nintendo games so much, buy the console. Instead of hoping for a very large improbability

Edited by SLAMt4stic: 12/12/2013 8:21:10 PMThis is what Nintendo needs to do. Aren't 90% of the games capable of being played with the pro controller? Why are they not selling units packaged with the Pro controller instead of the ridiculous touch screen? That would cheapen it up and make it a lot more attractive to consumers. And as far as games go: Star Fox Metroid Pokemon MMO Earthbound

They wouldn't be Nintendo games if they weren't on a Nintendo console. Rather they just stuck to handheld if their console business went down the drain (which it won't).
-
And you guys believe MS and Sony wont butt -blam!- Nintendo games into the ground? Metroid will become an even shittier version of crisis. Zelda will become open exploration with generic graphics and a heavy emphasis on customization. Mario would be...probably pretty good. But, no. You CANNOT beat Nintendo when it comes to social gatherings. I had more fun playing Nintendo Land with 5 people than I do playing anything on XBL

I believe Handhelds would be the way to go for them, the problem is that even with the success and profits from their handhelds, they still aren't doing as well as they could be. Someone cited that even with the money from the 3DS, Nintendo is still bleeding out and it isn't going to be enough to stabilize them in the years to come after the Wii U's flop at the beginning and the lack of interest as it's been around. They need something game-changing, and they need it soon. Square Enix and a lot of other gaming related companies/publishers are in the same place that they are, a collapse of the gaming market could be coming up, and things like Cod and Battlefield are all that's keeping some things afloat it's theorized. Will explain if needed.
It’s unfortunate that I can’t play the new Super Smash Bros. or Zelda unless I shell out $300 for a system with no third party support, last-generation graphics and a gamepad I don’t even want to use.
Close to my position.
It’s pathetic that I can’t play the new Monster Hunter, Wonderful 101, and Bayonetta 2 unless I shell out $300 for a system with no third party support, last-generation graphics and a gamepad I don’t even want to use.
I don't really care about Nintendo exclusives anymore besides Super Smash Bros and Pokemon so if they decided to stop making home consoles I would be ok long as they continue to make handhelds.
-
But then what will Nintendo consoles have to offer?
-
would be awesome to play smash bros on an xbox
-
Don't get me wrong i would love to see Nintendo games on other platforms. But if Nintendo went the way of Sega that would be one less competitor in the console race. and that terrifies me. I don't trust Sony or MS to do the right thing with less competition.
-
Agreed nintendo should go the way of SEGA
-
Nintendo games on the xbox and ps4 would be the greatest thing ever.
-
Probably home consoles yeh. Obviously they shouldn't stop making handhelds though because the 3DS is a huge success.
