So for a college essay, I have to answer
If you were given funding for a small engineering project, what would you do?
So my idea was basically how to improve airsoft guns. I'd approach it from an engineering perspective only (what is the problem, how can I fix it), not from an entertainment perspective or argumentative perspective. Everyone I've talked to has said the solution I have is actually a really good idea. HOWEVER, two people have given me these... complaints.
1) It's too immature. Improving airsoft guns doesn't improve society; it's a toy, it's weird to have this much knowledge about a toy (coming from someone who's job is to write about obscure fashion).
2) Airsoft guns are related to guns, an extremely controversial topic, with violent connotations. If this kid knows much about airsoft guns, is he also obsessed with guns and possibly violent?
These two people have huge biases against airsoft (1 thinks it's stupid, 2 is EXTREMELY anti-gun). Everyone else says it's fine and it shows I have passions, problem solving skills, and ability to manipulate machinery, all positive attributes of an aspiring engineer. However, these others are friends, and my friends think like me.
I'd like to hear some other people's perspective. Is it too "dangerous" to write a college essay on improving airsoft guns?

If you have an idea that could actually improve air soft guns then definitely do your essay on that. An engineer's job is to make shit work and improve shit; it's not about changing or improving society, or shying away from subjects that have a stigma attached to them. They're testing your ability to see the small details and improve them
