So, one of the most thrown around phrases round these parts is "X isn't Halo". It's been thrown around in terms of the actual game itself (Most common being Reach and 4 these days). But I ask this - What is Halo to you? What makes Halo, "Halo"? Is it the gameplay, the competitive potential or is it the Developer itself?
Personally, what makes Halo, "Halo" for me is the lore and the Forerunners especially. The sense of wonder, excitement and discovery surrounds them. My first real source of Halo (Played Reach casually as my first Halo game, didn't think much of it - probably the game that feels the least "Halo) was Cryptum, and every page turn brought something new to marvel at.

Edited by Apotheosis: 12/9/2013 5:59:18 AMHalo 2 and 3 are Halo. The MP wasn't perfect for sure, but it kept me coming back for more and more. They still do if I fire them up, it's not just nostalgia. I play a match and say, "Oh, if I had just done this and this better." or, "Ok, this time I'm going that way, because I know playerX is going the other way..." etc. There's some serious magic in those games. I feel like Reach isn't that far off, but the MP maps never really did it for me with that game.

No sprint and a noticeable skill gap for starters.

The story, visuals, and campaign come first. However, multiplayer also has to be good.
I like Halo 4, judge me
Arena shooter gameplay on a console.

I read that book as well, before reading it I thought I knew a majority about the halo universe, after reading I realized how small of an amount I actually knew. To me It's the Halo universe that makes it what it is, I'd play it if the gameplay was like world of warcraft, Skyrim, civilization, anything as long as the universe continues to expand.

The Lore, it was the first thing that attracted me to Halo.
-
Intriguing sci-fi and mystery, fun FPS combat with smart and variable enemies, phenomenal music.

Its really sad when I think back on the memories.. I don't think gaming will be like this ever again.

Great plot campaign Fun multiplayer Forge and custom games that make the game last Halo 3- very fun custom games (lived very long) Halo reach - fun custom games (lived long) Halo4- custom games didn't deliver (short lived)

For me it was the mystery of the entire universe and IMO 343i ruined that mystery.

All halo games and the books are halo to me. The mystery of the forerunners, the instability of the covenant and the UNSC, Spartans and Elites. These are all the things that define Halo to me.

Mario is to Nintendo as Halo is to Xbox

Story, lore, customization, custom games, forge and competitive multiplayer (well it used to at least).

A game that I grew up with and used to love, but really it's just a generic Sci-Fi FPS that I don't really care for anymore.
