After a lovely Italian dinner I was strolling around outside last night, above me was the half moon, and Venus was setting in the afterglow of the sunset. Of course that got me wondering, will Destiny truly convey the respective locations of the worlds? Any old game can plunk you down on a battlefield and say "You're on Mars fighting zombies."
But not many can make you think "Hey, that's the place I was just on, there's a battle going on there, and player's lives are being changed."
I want the planets to be reminders in Destiny, sort of like the night sky in Skyrim was also your skill tree.
Basic videogame immersion depends on the player getting sucked into their surroundings in the game, but the next layer of immersion is the point at which they also start having an awareness of another environment in the same game. We do this in real life, you sit in your classroom or office, but you are aware of your cat at home that's probably chewing on your house plants. In most FPS games, you are put in the center of the conflict, you're only concern is your immediate surroundings, or (in the case of MMO's) what alerts appear on your map. This has long been an addictive element of Real Time Strategy games, but it's rarely found in the FPS genre, often because of incredibly linear environments. The best example of it that I can think of is when on the Halo 3 mission, The Ark, you could look up and see a space battle being slugged out overhead. But that itself wasn't overly significant, you were The Chief, an unstoppable hero.
In Destiny we are mortal.
Obviously Destiny will have some terrific combat to keep our eyes on the ground, but did anyone else spend time in Reach just staring at the skyboxes after a battle? Now imagine how much more significant a skybox is if you can actually travel to those planets and moons overhead.
What would draw you into Destiny? How could it be even more immersive?
