If you're arguing with someone and they begin using emoticons, "lol"s, and anything else that fits in with the texting scene of expressing something, do you think that that's a sign(on the internet and during conversations or arguments of course) that someone has been made unbelievably upset and is playing it off that they are not, or is just trying to be as flamboyant and "happy-go-lucky" as they can be to prove the point that they are not upset.

It depends on the context really, if you start using them in an argument you are probably doing damage limitation and trying to save face/diffuse the situation because you have lost. That being said, it doesn't necessarily mean you are losing for example when I debate things with my friend via skype's sms stuff rather than going into an all out 'YOU FILHTY LIBRUL' 'YOU DUMBDASs CONSERITV A' we keep it light hearted and poke fun at each other's viewpoints and our own. Context is the most important thing for them.
