If you're arguing with someone and they begin using emoticons, "lol"s, and anything else that fits in with the texting scene of expressing something, do you think that that's a sign(on the internet and during conversations or arguments of course) that someone has been made unbelievably upset and is playing it off that they are not, or is just trying to be as flamboyant and "happy-go-lucky" as they can be to prove the point that they are not upset.
Discuss.

They suck. :)

Edited by Otthild: 10/30/2013 4:56:19 AMIt means you've won and they're lying about how hurt they are. Also, emoticons are for facebook or talking to someone who's hot. (Also bitches) EMOTING IS FOR THE WEAK

It depends on the context really, if you start using them in an argument you are probably doing damage limitation and trying to save face/diffuse the situation because you have lost. That being said, it doesn't necessarily mean you are losing for example when I debate things with my friend via skype's sms stuff rather than going into an all out 'YOU FILHTY LIBRUL' 'YOU DUMBDASs CONSERITV A' we keep it light hearted and poke fun at each other's viewpoints and our own. Context is the most important thing for them.

If I'm having an argument with a girl on who is cuter (me or her) then of course I'm going to use bloody emoticons.

Bump for more input.

If someone says something so unbelievably stupid it's funny I'll respond with a lol, followed by pointing out why they're stupid. If there is no substance to the post it usually means they've conceded and want to look like they just stopped caring.
-
I use emojis sometimes when Im joking around. Frankly I hate seeing crap like 'lol' why can't you just type "Ha!"
-
i hope not, otherwise that would mean
joking aside it really has no place in a formal debate. i'm all for removing pretension (indeed, i hate it when people don't remove pretension in an attempt to sound "FORTYSEVENDEEPNINETYNINEYOU"), but adding stuff for the sake of informality is just as "ugh" worthy.
Does this mean... I've been all happy go lucky to hide me being upset this entire time?! D:
