I now know why horsepower is intoxicating.

I've never haven driven cars that were very fast. I always like the slow car fast method since both cars I own are slow. I never really felt the thrill of being in a car that was quick. Today I drove an RX-8. I know its not the fastest car but it had over a 100 more horsepower than my current car and close to the same weight. It was so easy to speed and that car and felt very thrilling when accelerating in it. It also felt better since the RX-8 was a stick, and my Celica is an slushbox. What car made you realize that horsepower was intoxicating, and what is the fastest car you have driven?

  • I took a ride in a NASCAR car in Daytona. I would say going 190mph through those corners is amazing, but I still can't comprehend it.

      • the RX-8 is a turd. with ALL rotary motors there is no torque. you have to rely on the high rev of the motor. but hope you had fun driving it!

          • My Grand Am GT has 200hp and its a V6. I hate driving fast in it because the thing eats gas like a fat kid eats cake.

            • My car had 120hp in 2004, probably less now. So I have yet to make such a discovery.

            • You get used to it. If you drove the RX8 daily it would feel slow to you. Anything under 500 feels normal to me now. Once you start modifying, you always want more.

              • Having been on a 200+hp GSX-R only one time, I'm fairly certain that my life expectancy has dropped about ten or fifteen years, but holy hell was it worth it.

              • You don't know what's good until you get in an airplane with an stunt pilot. I got the chance to ride with an older family friend in a WW2 era fish biplane, and it was without a doubt the most awesome ride I've ever been on. Open air cockpit and were doing barrel rolls, loops, verticle stalls and am sorts of crazy shit and I loved every minute of it . No car ride has yet to come anywhere close to it. That being said, there's no replacement for displacement... turbos help though lol. Probably the best car ride I've had was in a twin Turbo dodge Cummins diesel. That thing could keep up with just about anything on the road save crotch rockets and such.

While the variables are more complex than the following statement implies, it does show that there is a reason that people "like power".
There's no replacement for displacement.
My current car (2008 Dodge Caliber SRT4) is among the quickest and fastest cars that I've ever owned. As a 4 banger and considering some of the cars that I have had over the years (including a 1970 Oldsmobile 442-W30), that is saying a lot (and undermines the premise of displacement being the only way to get power). It's a neck-snapping, torquey little beast with 300 or so horses and not a lot of curb-weight. If you want it to go fast, it can and will. If you want to drive it like a grocery-getter, it does so very well too.

              • I spend most of my paycheck on car parts. Modifying and tuning my Subaru Impreza Wrx. I've worked on a few RX-8. They are a nice car but that wankel or WANKER engine is a pain the the but to work on.

No one car I can think of made me begin to think that. The fastest cars I have had or driven are; -My '01 Cobra convertible -A '72 Mustang Mach I I had with a modified 429. Easily the most powerful car I've ever had/built. -'87 Buick Grand National. I'd love to drive some more modern power vehicles, but it's just too few and far between opportunities.

                  • I enjoy driving my mom's Jetta 2.5. It's not a competitive car by any means, but 2nd can get me up to speed pretty quickly...
