Good Cop Bad Cop
A study conducted by Samantha Mann et al. investigated the effectiveness of the two person interrogation technique, commonly portrayed in Crime Dramas as the Good Cop-Bad Cop routine. The study was conducted with 100 student participants who where randomly allocated to either tell the truth about a job they previously had or to lie and answer questions about a fictional job. The incentive for the lying group students was a £5 reward if they successfully fooled the interviewer.
The study was conducted with a neutral female primary 'interrogator' and a secondary note taking male 'interrogator'. The second interrogator was given either a Supportive, Neutral or Suspicious demeanor. This was portrayed by body language such as smiling and nodding for Supportive, No overt body language for neutral, Shaking the head and frowning for the suspicious group.
What they found was that in the presence of a supportive secondary interrogator the truth group gave more detailed responses about their job whereas the liar group tended not to add greater detail to their responses in any of the three conditions. This allowed the liars to be more easily identified by contrasting them on the positive/supportive interrogator.
An interesting side note to the deceit group was deliberate eye contact lasted longer than typical eye contact. This goes against the myth that liars avert their gaze, when in actual fact people who make an effort of maintaining eye contact are usually being deceitful.
So Neutral Cop - Good Cop works better for getting information out of people than Good Cop - Bad Cop, according to this particular study that is.
