Since the age of man fear has plagued us, prompting creation to conflict such fears. One of our greatest fears of course is that of death. Without any clear or decisive information about death, it seemed like an inescapable monster. Since that time we understand much about death, and accept it as a symptom of life. How did we learn to cope with this threat? Creation. With the fear looming over us we created comfort in the form of an afterlife. Ensuring consciousness never truly dies, and that all our hard work surviving would not be rewarded with an abrupt end.
Now in our modern world the fear is still strong at work, but with all employed gods every culture has its own cushion. A promise of eternal life for simple compliance, but could we be on the verge of radical creation yet again?
Imagine a world where humans could simply integrate themselves into technology to maintain biological function well beyond current limits. Or even being able to upload our brains into sophisticated technological programs and live on through means of online connections. Why not take it a step further and import our consciousness to more physical vehicles, capable of doing the things we current animals can do now. We would have our thoughts, opinions, personalities, and the promise of everlasting life a reality, not just a fable of faith.
This may all sound like science fiction, but such creation is currently being explored by several brilliant minds, aided by the wealth of our elite, and driven by the ambition of one daring Russian. Dmitry Itskov is currently hard at work with many others developing the 2045 initiative, granting all of the abilities outlined in his four step process into immortality.
With these ideas already in development, it our course calls us to question the effects of its implementation. This sort of gift will not be easily accomplished, nor will it launch at a very affordable price. With so few in the first round, mistakes will be made, and things discovered. I suspect early implantations taking place on massive storage servers, to accompany for increased growth of knowledge. The benefits of such would be amazing. Free range to pursue knowledge shared online, and stored by advanced self-aware programs. With Humans most impressive feature, the ability to detect patterns, and make accurate predictions. With time constantly repeating, such patterns could be analyzed and interpreted, effectively predicting major global events, making early applicants oracles.
But who would want such power? Inability to cease existing, while the world around you repeats itself endlessly. Living as a coveted resource, rather than a biological entity, long since remembered. No more access to basic Human senses, while later rounds of the project start to face their own complications. Who’s to say they’re any better off? Are we really so controlled by our fear that we are willing to desecrate our humanity to pursue immortality?

I think it's worth it. Honestly, I would sign up to live as an entity that just observed humanity.

Edited by Psy: 10/7/2013 10:31:07 PMI would welcome the chance to become one with the machine, If essentially omniscience and Immortality came at the price of my humanity... I wouldn't even have to think twice :D

Good read and I now have something to ponder over the next few hours at work. Can't say I can put together a good enough reply to this that isn't going to be said already.
