What should I expect from X-COM: Enemy Unknown?

It's free on Steam, so I thought I might as well check it out.
EDIT: Not free, just free to play for the next few hours. It is, however, 75% off. My fault entirely.

It's pretty fun, I like it. It'll take a bit to get used to and it can be pretty difficult at times. It's really easy to screw up and suddenly half your squad is dead. I like making all my friends characters. Most of them usually die though but it helps you get more attached to your squad if you customize them.
