If it was made by ANY other company, it would be universally hated and called things like gimmicky, stupid, and unnecessary. Let's take a moment to realize how high of a pedestal we place Gaben and Friends on, as well as how willing we are to put other people/groups/companies down without a second though.

Necro bump

The track-pads can also function as speakers too. Seriously.
-
I don't know, it could be quite good. The buttons certainly need some work though.
-
The circlejerk that surrounds valve is unreal
-
I'll back anyone that wants to improve the awful twin analog stick setup.

We will just have to see how it plays out. People can go on and on how it will suck, but we don't know until people have had their hands on it and talk about it. This design has not been done before(that i know of) so of course its going to get some flack from people that expected a copy of current console controllers. I think they got some balls for throwing out the sticks. And if my hypothesis* is correct, i think it will be a pretty cool device. *Since the track pads have 3 ring like layers, i believe the farther from the center we go, the higher the sensitivity will be in game. Say for a FPS. Keeping the finger in the middle circle will allow the camera to linger in the players view, putting pressure to the left or right will slightly move the camera in that direction. If when the player decides to look around, they will just move their finger onto the 2nd ring in the direction they want to look, and the camera moves more quicker than it would if held in the center circle. And as for the 3rd ring, that would be when the high sensitive twitch comes to play. Same for the other trackpad. Keeping it in the center can allow walking, running, sprinting (depending if the game allows different speeds). My 2 cents.

Valve >

There's a reason why all controllers look similar
-
I don't know, really unless I see a Valve game with a number 3 at the end I'm not interested in what Valve has to offer.
need some L4D3 man....
-
Agreed im glad the someone realized a way to get rid of analog controls. Hopefully it can be almost as accurate as the mouse.
-
How do you even hold this thing? Upside down??
-
So this one was wondering... Are they gonna show the front of the controller? Oh wait a minute...
-
I want to use that thang now
-
Or maybe we put the other companies on too low a pedestal? ......Nah. I can't even imagine if MS released this. Oh good lord.
-
I've said from the start, as soon as i saw the controller that it is a piece of shit, i'm using my wired 360 controller like i always have. That haptic response thing is the same thing on my phone and i think it's not going to work for a controller. I put Valve on the same pedestal as everyone else, do something good you get my praise, do something bad and you can go -blam!- yourself
-
Is there a video that helps me understand how it's used?
-
I think it's the ugliest thing I've ever seen. I really don't care about aesthetics if it works and feels comfortable so we'll have to see I guess.
-
I don't have any personal attatchement towards Valve. However I'm really interested in the Steam controller because it's really the first gamepad design where thought has clearly been put into what is the number one problem with console shooters: the aiming interface. Whether the touchpads are better or worse than analogue sticks is a debate of its own, but at least Valve is ready to try something new. You know, it would've been much easier for them to just go with regular analogue sticks.

Edited by iGraviton: 9/28/2013 3:14:39 AMHow dare you question Based Gaben.
Seriously, when I first saw the picture I said to myself, "WHAT IN THE ALMIGHTY FUCK. GABEN, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE." But as I read more about what it aims to do, and I read some feedback by devs who've actually used it, I'm eager to try it out.
From what I've seen most people think it looks terrible. Also it can't be the worst controller of all time because the N64 controller exists.
-
People fear what they don't understand.

Edited by Fresh Pancake: 9/28/2013 6:00:11 AMThis is the best controller ever -Anonymous Dev

The lack of a D-pad and action buttons is disturbing.
-
What the hell is that thing Lieutenant?
-
the layout is terrible. having two buttons for each thumb is going to kill gameplay, and if those are analog 'sticks' then its going to be very hard to move and look around.

Who was in charge of the ergonomics department?
