Over the course of recent months my view of the world has started to become what some may see as jaded. The world is a dangerous and unforgiving place, with acts of human violence and terror being the world we live in, whether we like it or not.
Some of my family have begun commenting that they believe I am turning cynical, but I honestly believe I am just being a realist. We can pretend that the world is a amazing happy place, and it can be, but sooner or later we need to open our eyes and wake up.

Cynicism is awfully close to realism today.

Until the world improves, cynicism = realism.

Welcome to the club. No one brought refreshments because we didn't think anyone would show up.

The world is a dangerous and terrible place. Fortunately I live in America.

It's OK to be somewhat cynical as long as you keep a relatively realistic outlook on things. The world is a rather shitty place but over centuries we've seen massive amounts of progress. Tone your skills and passions to help further that progress, and your cynicism, if it even remains over time, will most likely not turn into the sort we tend to pair with pessimism and depression. Godspeed friend.

What you say is true. Allowing it to affect your behaviour in such a way that you become 'morally nihilistic' and indifferent? That's cynicism.
